I had just put my four-year-old down for a nap when the doorbell rang—loud and insistent. Annoyed, I opened the door.

A man I didn't recognize stood there—mid-50s, stooped, with hard-worn features. His eyes scanned the marble floors and chandelier behind me before landing back on my face.

"Emily," he said, his voice rough. "It's me. Your father."

I froze. This man—this ghost from my past—was the one who abandoned me at an orphanage after my mom di:ed. I was three. Two brutal years passed before I was adopted at five. I'd worked so hard to move on.

I swallowed. "Why are you here?"

His smirk grew. "I heard you're doing well. Nice house, car, family. Thought it's time you shared the wealth—with the man who made it possible."

"What?" I stammered.
