«Clean Up» 2018
After losing her son, Jungjoo loses all hope in life, drinking and smoking her life away. She tries to overcome the pain by attending church and praying diligently to no avail. Then one day, she meets Mingoo, a convicted criminal, wearing dirty clothes that have not seen a washer in who knows how long. He carries all his belongings in a plastic bag. Seeing him reminds Jungjoo of an event 12 years earlier.
Clean up is a film about a woman coming face to face with a past she wants to forget. She kidnaps a child out of desperation and meets that child again 12 years later. The problem is that the child is now poor, lonely and scorned. She can’t ignore him, and not remembering who she is the boy feels safe with her. Clean up is a film about salvation and forgiveness. Will the two be able to overcome their feelings of guilt, resentment, and anger? Rather than giving a hasty conclusion, the film advances slowly towards a faint glimmer of hope.

The local economy in the southwest of Hunan province is not active. Therefore, the people either go out to work or work as miners in the mountain. As a result of mining accidents, the government has tried to regulate, but many people still mine illegally in order to make a living. Miners often go down mines without protection, and after many years, many of them develop pneumoconiosis.
Later, with prices plummeting and the government overhauling them, the need for survival is no longer met by illegal mining. Many people have to find other jobs, either farming at home or working south. The miners, suffering from pneumoconiosis, are on their way to misery.

Liu Hao, a patient with mental disability and Down syndrome who is nearly 50 years old, is as innocent as a child. His greatest joy is to buy a bottle of Coca-Cola to drink with the money he earned from housework. Liu Sibo, an autistic patient with mental disability, cannot control his emotions well. It is commonplace for him to break several pieces of glass a day.
According to the census, the number of mentally disabled people in China at the end of 2010 was 5.68 million, but such a large group rarely appears in ordinary people’s vision. Since the government currently lacks a complete guardianship system for special populations, the responsibility of caring for the mentally disabled falls on the shoulders of charity organizations.
This documentary tracked such a philanthropic organization in Beijing and recorded the daily life of the two mentally disabled main characters. With extraordinary patience and love from the staff of the organization, can this special group of people enjoy basic human rights and strive to live independently?
