«In Character» 2018
A behind-the-scenes documentary, In Character follows the production of Songs of the Youth 1969 (记得少年那首歌, dir. Ye Jing 叶京, 2016), an autobiographical film based on the director’s own life as a teenager during the Cultural Revolution. Focusing on an early stage of the film’s making—the selection and training of the actors— In Character reveals a macabre process of performative immersion in revolutionary ideology and media. The result is so effective that we witness on screen the eerie and disturbing transformation of the young actors as they interiorize teachings and practices of the revolutionary past.

Eight couples of different ages and backgrounds talk about their marriage in front of the camera. Their dialogues lay bare the marital conflicts which have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Fairy tales often end with “and they lived happily after.” However, the end of the fairy tale marks a new beginning in reality. The film challenges the eight couples with the underlying questions that are rarely discussed between husbands and wives. Why do they decide to marry? When the passion fades, what is it that sustains the relationship? How do they deal with their in-laws? What changes are they faced with once children are involved? How do they put up with each other?
Another thought-provoking work by the Taipei Film Festival award-winning director, Shen Ko-shang. He spent seven years documenting the most personal and intimate conversations of eight couples. Through the genuine dialogues, the films guides the audience to rethink and reflect on the meaning of happiness and marriage.

With unexpected humor and extraordinary access to the Kingdom’s royals and religious leaders, Joeyʻs emotional journey reveals what it means to be different in a society ruled by tradition, and what it takes to be accepted without forsaking culture and tradition. Leitis in Waiting is an inside story, created by a Polynesian transgender woman who once competed, and won the crown in, Joey’s beauty pageant.

The problem is that the child is now poor, lonely and scorned. She can’t ignore him, and not remembering who she is the boy feels safe with her. Clean up is a film about salvation and forgiveness. Will the two be able to overcome their feelings of guilt, resentment, and anger? Rather than giving a hasty conclusion, the film advances slowly towards a faint glimmer of hope.
