Spike Lee originally wanted Robert De Niro for the role of Sal in “Do the Right Thing” (1989). But De Niro turned down the part, saying that it was too similar to many of the parts he had played in the past. In the end, the part went to Danny Aiello. Robert De Niro’s photo is one of the pictures that appear on Sal’s “Wall of Fame.”

In the original scripted ending, Sal and Lee’s character Mookie reconcile. Sal, although upset, tells Mookie that he understands that Mookie had to do the right thing. Spike Lee claimed that original producer Paramount even demanded at the last moment that Sal and Mookie should hug. Lee refused, calling it a “Hollywood bullsh ending,” as he wanted the epilogue to remain truthful to the characters, and took the project to Universal Pictures.

Lee credits then-president of Universal Pictures Thomas Philip Po***ck for standing by the movie, even after it caused considerable controversy during its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie was planned for a summer 1989 USA release, but Po***ck was under heavy pressure to release it in the fall out of fear of inciting riots. This was all the more pressing since Po***ck was still under bodyguard protection after releasing “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1988), as he and his family had been getting death threats. Even Lee told Po***ck that he would understand if the movie were released at a later time, but Po***ck stood by his decision and released the film on the intended date.

In 2019, Lee became the first person of color to be nominated for the Academy Awards for both Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. He was nominated for writing “Do the Right Thing” (1989) and “BlacKkKlansman” (2018), respectively, winning for the latter. (IMDb)

“Get on the Bus” (1996) is a drama film directed by Spike Lee and written by Reggie Rock Bythewood. The movie follows a group of Black men traveling to the Million Man March on a bus with an incredible cast of actors. It was a unique film by Lee as it focused on the diverse personalities and complex perspectives that these men faced while trying to figure out what it means to be a Black man in America.

This generation was too young to understand most of the dialogue when first viewed this film. The film makes more sense as an adult, making those who know appreciate it further. It’s a movie worth revisiting, especially for the historical element of the Million Man March and the fantastic discussions.

"Cornbread, Earl, and Me" (1975) tells the gripping story of a young and aspiring African-American basketball player killed by the police due to mistaken identity and its effects on the community. Directed by Joseph Manduke and written by Leonard Lamensdorf, who based the story on the novel "Hog Butcher" by Ronald Fair, the film stars an incredible cast of actors that brought raw emotions to an issue that is still too common. The movie is a cinematic masterpiece from beginning to end. The soundtrack by The Blackbyrds is an additional component that drives the film to extraordinary levels. I highly recommend this movie for viewing.

"A Soldier’s Story" (1984) is a crime mystery directed by Norman Jewison and based on the play by Charles Fuller called "A Soldier’s Play." The movie stars a cast of several famous actors early in their careers, which Howard Rollins leads. "A Soldier’s Story" is a phenomenal movie and a master class in storytelling and acting. The characters are very complex, which strongly represents how complicated it was for black men to exist in an army where certain people don't want them there. How could a black man fight for a country where many of their citizens were against equal rights?

The film's antagonist, Sergeant Waters (Adolph Ceasar), is one of the most convoluted characters I have ever seen in a movie. Howard Rollins represents the integration and the new world as a Black Captain. All the men (white and black) in the movie have never seen a Black Captain. It's argumentative that this is the movie where Denzel Washington solidified his persona as an actor from the influence of Rollins. Both Rollins and Washington together were impressive. Larry Riley played C.J., a Southern countryman Sergent Water despised. Riley was a representation of where he was from, and Waters felt like his type would never help the progression of black people. C.J. was a simple, blues-singing guy who got along with everyone.

All of the other actors represent something, so they are symbolic. With all the controversy and symbolism in the film, there is a fantastic mystery that Rollins is responsible for solving. This movie requires multiple viewings, not because it's complicated or hard to follow, because it's neither. It’s just that good.

Director: Norman Jewison
Writer: Charles Fuller

He soon learns that on this base, trust is sparse, and secrets are a currency all their own.

"He Got Game" (1998) is a sports drama written and directed by Spike Lee and stars Denzel Washington and NBA champion Ray Allen. This movie marks the third time Lee and Washington linked up, and this was Allen's acting debut. Additional cast members include Rosario Dawson, Hill Harper, Bill Nunn, Lonette McKee, Jim Brown, and Ned Beatty. Public Enemy performed the soundtrack, which Def Jam Recording released. The album features the hit single, 'He Got Game,' but the overall album did not sell well. The movie is an underrated Lee classic that only gets discussed a little. It has a good story and many nostalgic moments seeing former college coaches and NBA players.
