He stood his ground—and won. One man’s lawsuit becomes a blueprint for protecting the rights of Orange County’s unhoused. 👊 Link in bio.

Article synopsis: Patrick Hogan, a longtime advocate and unhoused Orange County resident, refused to comply when police and Caltrans attempted a campsite sweep along the 91 Freeway in October 2023. He insisted on his legal rights under a Northern California Sanchez v. Caltrans ruling, which mandates a 48-hour notice, shelter offers, and property storage (“bag and tag”). Despite official postings, officers did not provide outreach, documentation, or a place to store items. Hogan retrieved his own video footage and successfully sued in small claims court - becoming the first unhoused individual in OC to win under Sanchez. A landmark personal victory with broader implications for homeless rights and accountability.

A tribute to Larry Ford (1963-2025):

Halfway through field production of my third episode of “NO FIXED ABODE: Voices of the OC Homeless” I encountered Larry Ford, unhoused veteran, skilled survivalist, “graduate” of the riverbed, and fierce advocate for, as he puts it, “The right to be somewhere.” A simple principle of life he believed in, but as he explains in an extensive interview halfway through Episode 3, a perilous philosophy to live by on the mean streets of Orange County. “I’m standing my ground out here because I have a right to stand on this ground,” he told me. “I’ve traveled all around the world. I didn’t need a house. I don’t need a destination. The Constitution guarantees it.” That was Larry Ford. His travels are over now. Larry Ford passed away on June 6, 2025 on the streets he dared to walk as a homeless man, unsheltered and unbowed. For that he was pursued and hounded by law enforcement, and universally respected and loved by the homeless, housed and unhoused, and for his many kindnesses toward them over the years, and for his unwavering advocacy on behalf of a human being’s “right to roam.”

Now on our website! The 9th Annual Weekend of Art recently took place in Los Alamitos, showcasing an explosion of local artistic talent concentrated in one place over a two-day exhibition. Los Al TV producer John Underwood captured all of the artists receiving their awards in several categories, as well as highlights of the two-day event held at Oak Middle School’s Lions Auditorium. Over 300 pieces of artwork were displayed for public gallery-style viewing, accompanied by almost non-stop musical and dance performances on a main stage, making for a remarkable and occasionally magical exhibition of local artists. The artwork ranged from two-dimensional canvas paintings to three-dimensional crafts, including still photography, ceramics, fabrics, and glass art.

Now on our website! This “Operation BossLift” day came about as a result of efforts by the military support organization Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) to acknowledge, inform and honor all employers who hire and retain workers who also have part-time commitments to military service as reservists and guardsmen and women, and who from time to time are called away for brief or sometimes extended military training or deployment. These employers are then expected to hold the positions of these citizen soldiers for them upon their return from military assignment. Some do . . . some don’t. The company employers who have been shown to consistently protect their employees with a military commitment by allowing them to leave their jobs for military duty, and then retain their positions for them when they return as a matter of policy and practice were honored on Friday January 19 at the Joint Forces training base with of all things. . . .a helicopter ride, and not just any whirlybird, but a UH-60 Blackhawk, and not just any ride, but a jaunt up the coast along Palos Verdes Peninsula and back. Such valued employers include Disney, Amazon, SpaceX, as well as many small businesses with as few as one or two citizen soldier employees. 150 employers in all participated. All caught a ride courtesy of the 140th Aviation Air Assault Battalion based at JFTB, including yours truly. And it indeed was a wild ride!

Live now on our website! Shakespeare’s classic and timeless tragedy of Hamlet is executed here by the Shakespeare by the Sea traveling ensemble of intrepid actors who dedicate their performance season to just two of the Bard’s classics. And they nailed this one. Los Al TV’s John Underwood and crew were there to capture the well-executed production in a setting many of Shakespeare’s plays were meant to be presented- outdoors and before a live and responsive audience. Performed at Rush Park in Rossmoor, California on July 15, 2023, the picnic like setting and open stage formatting gives audiences and actors a unique opportunity to interact, as was also the custom of Shakespeare’s own time.
