When in a controlled studio, the lighting design can make all the difference in creating the perfect ambiance, look, and style of a photo or video clip.

Here, we make use of RED Digital Cinema cameras and our in-house studio with Chimera Lighting overhead lightbox, built out set with walls, and full RGB lighting control. Especially when shooting automotive, lighting can be key to determining a brand's look and feel.

The studio lighting must complement the vehicle's curves, angles, and styling while providing the necessary illumination to showcase the car's features in the most flattering way possible.

Congrats to the Formula Drift crew for 20 years of racing! Their 2023 season kicks off this weekend in Long Beach, CA and it's got us remembering some of the seasons that we spent filming drifting. Some of these clips are 10 years old, crazy!

Shooting cars, especially prototypes, can sometimes be pretty tricky. That's where our custom tools and fabrication come in hand.

This simple-looking dolly we built is based on the Dana Dolly logic but is more compact to not contact door panels and has different mounting to fit a larger variety of fluid heads and vertical spacing.

It's currently fit with a eMotimo Spectrum ST4 motion control head and a RED Digital Cinema camera package. All monitoring, focus control, pan/tilt/slide, and camera control is remote operated. It has helped capture smooth and stable camera movements without touching any surfaces; especially important when shooting footage inside vehicles.

We've been shooting with RED Digital Cinema cameras for more than a decade now and have had them in snow, dirt, dust, tire smoke, and hanging out at the end of our camera car arm.

The 6K resolution Komodo is one of our current action workhorses - small enough to fly or do car-to-car and still detailed enough to support national advertising.

That’s a wrap on filming! Our recent project was filled with production time in our in-house studio, EV charger visits, and even the streets of downtown Long Beach. Be on the lookout for additional BTS footage where we used our MotoCrane LLC arm car to film crisp car-to-car footage.

As usual, quite a few cars saw the Clockwork treatment in 2022. Automotive is one of our specialities (studio, location work, and car-to-car filming) and here is just a small sample of the picture cars and camera cars that got in front of our lenses this year.

2022 seemed to just fly past and we're thankful for what a year of growth it has been. This year we completed the full studio set build out of our in-house filming studio, the installation of our 20-ft Chimera overhead lightbox, and the arrival of our new Motorcrane Radical arm equipped X5 camera car. It was great to work with new clients and strengthen our work with existing ones, here's to 2023!

It takes a team to build, setup, and operate a camera car system for car-to-car filming. Operating alone requires a driver, arm operator, head operator, and focus puller - minimum. Very much practice makes perfect.
