is about more than awareness — our ultimate goal is prevention. We can stop sexual assault, harassment, and abuse before it happens.

We all have a right to safety in our daily lives — to have our boundaries respected and make choices about what happens to our bodies — at home, school, the workplace, and in public places. That sense of well-being and safety can be taken away by knowing that sexual assault, harassment, and abuse are common and not always taken seriously.

We need to stop being afraid of talking about suicidal thoughts. When someone comes to see me I have to give my confidentiality speech of which counselors are responsible to break confidentiality for su***de. I always add “not that we shouldn’t talk about those things because they can be perfectly normal.” I think a lot of people are nervous about talking about the thoughts at all because they are afraid that we will send them to an inpatient unit. Which I think can keep people from going to therapy or being 💯 with their therapist. There are a lot of factors that go into this decision and I want to clear some things up.
1. Having suicidal thoughts can be normal.
2. Suicidal thoughts can be a way a person has learned to cope.
3. Mental health professionals will not send you to an inpatient unit solely for suicidal thoughts.
4. Mental health professionals are listening for thoughts/ideations PLUS intensity of thoughts PLUS methods (ways a person has thought out) PLUS means (access to harm) PLUS if the person has a plan PLUS a persons intent to harm themselves or another person.
5. There are also risk and protective factors a mental health professional is also looking at. For example, a person’s support system or previous su***de attempts.
6. Talking about your suicidal thoughts especially to a trained professional can help.
7. Asking someone if they are having suicidal thoughts will not make someone kill themselves. Remember secrets don’t like the light. A person may feel relieved someone asked them.
No one wants to have these thoughts and they can be quite disturbing or disruptive to a person. Help is available 24/7 you can call or text 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. Lastly, we were saddened to hear about the death by su***de of Stephen tWitch Boss and our hearts go out to him and his loved ones. He was such a light to so many. If you didn’t know him but are feeling sad it is completely normal to be grieving someone you didn’t know personally but watched on tv or social media.
Please reach out if you are struggling. You matter. You are loved. You don’t need to earn your existence. You are worthy just as you are.

Today, our nation has begun learning about yet another mass shooting, this time at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two adults were shot dead by an 18-year-old high school student. In the days, weeks, months and years to come, professional counselors working in schools and communities will be called upon to help those who were impacted by what our country has witnessed all too many times.

Our Story

My name is Rachel Olshine and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas and a National Certified Counselor. I am originally from South Carolina and I graduated from Columbia International University with a B.S in Communications. After college, I moved to East Texas to work at a therapeutic boarding school for troubled teenagers. It was through that experience of working and living in-house with students that I felt confident in my calling to pursue a career in counseling. So I attended Clemson University and earned my M.Ed in Counselor Education with a focus on Clinical Mental Health and went into counseling full time.

Since 2011, I have worked in various counseling setting, both inpatient and outpatient, as well as counseling in the college setting. My desire is to work with students and adults of diverse populations, working toward holistic development, empowering individuals, and helping to foster an arena for change. Over the course of my career, I have been honored to help clients work towards their goals and personal wellness. I use EMDR and Cognitive Behavioral framework, addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationship issues, mood disorders, grief and loss, and family distress. I also have experience with group counseling and enjoy the process of learning from one another and sharing life together.

Another passion I have is career coaching. So many people are unhappy in their career fields and I work with individuals to explore their strengths, passions, and values in relation to work. I also offer workshops, group sessions, and consultations for businesses and schools over career development topics, mental health issues, and wellness. My heart is to help walk along with you in your personal journey, giving support and wise counsel.
