Left us on this day (Sept. 7) in 2003: WARREN ZEVON (cancer, age 56), considered one of rock's most consistently great singer-songwriters, crafting beautifully ironic & often darkly humorous songs...(This photo: my copy of Warren's 1978 album 'Excitable Boy', signed "Ahhoo! Warren Zevon"...) Warren first gained prominence as part of the early-’70s Los Angeles rock community that spawned the likes of The Eagles, Jackson Browne & Linda Ronstadt; his best-known compositions include "Werewolves of London", "Lawyers, Guns & Money" & "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" (all from his 1978 US #8 third album, 'Excitable Boy') as well as "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (a Top 40 hit for Linda Ronstadt), "Accidentally Like a Martyr", "Mohammed's Radio", "Carmelita", & "Hasten Down the Wind"; diagnosed with a cancer, he set out to create his final masterpiece, 'The Wind', featuring an all-star cast of friends; on October 30, 2002, David Letterman paid an unprecedented gesture to Warren by devoting that entire one-hour show to his friend; Warren left us just 12 days after the release of 'The Wind', which went on to be certified gold & earn five Grammy nominations, winning two; the biography 'I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon' was published in 2007…
