What Would King Would Say Today?

He would not flatter Democrats.
He would not appease Republicans.
He would not soothe the comfortable.

He would say:
America is in a moral emergency.

He would say:
Your nationalism has no soul.
Your centrism has no courage.
Your Christianity has no Christ.
Your patriotism has no Constitution.

He would say:
You cannot chant “freedom” while building cages.
You cannot chant “law and order” while breaking the law.
You cannot chant “Christian nation” while crucifying the poor.

He would say:
You have mistaken dominance for destiny.
You have mistaken tradition for truth.
You have mistaken comfort for morality.

And he would remind us:
“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

Sound familiar?

A Real Patriotism
Real patriotism is not loyalty to a party.
It is loyalty to the Constitution.
Real patriotism is not silence in the face of injustice.

It is confrontation in defense of truth.
Real patriotism is not nostalgia for hierarchy.
It is commitment to equality.
Real patriotism is not fear of the future.
It is courage to build it.

Dr. King believed America was not evil—just unfinished.

And right now, we are failing the assignment.

The Question He Would Ask Us:
Not “Which party are you in?”
Not “Who are you voting for?”
Not “Which side are you on?”

But:

Who are you willing to become?
Because the Constitution is still there.
The Statue of Liberty is still standing.
The words of MLK are still true.
What is missing is our courage.
And history is watching again.
