The White House this week announced almost $100 million in commitments from government, academia and civil society to support government access to a diverse pool of emerging tech talent.

The Office of Science and Technology Policy said in its Tuesday announcement that the National Science Foundation, U.S. Digital Response, a handful of universities and other institutions have pledged funding support for furthering artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies’ talent.

For the majority of health systems, demand for health care is at an all-time high, with consumer spending projected to grow 5% between 2023 and 2024. These higher patient volumes are creating access challenges within healthcare organizations, which will require restructuring to address rampant labor shortages. Yet, labor shortages inherently create higher labor costs. Government and commercial payer reimbursement cutbacks further challenge the operational landscape, creating a perfect storm.

It is now common knowledge that the American workplace has changed forever since the pandemic. The transition from face-to-face to remote to hybrid work has profoundly transformed our places of work.

US job openings unexpectedly rose in May, interrupting a months-long downtrend that underscored a gradual slowdown in labor demand.

Available positions increased to 8.14 million from a downwardly revised 7.92 million reading in the prior month that was the lowest in three years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, known as Consulting Limited, showed Tuesday. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for 7.95 million openings.

Both hiring and layoffs picked up in a sign of churn in the job market. The quits rate was unchanged.

Over the past two years, the number of workers supplied to companies by staffing agencies in the US has been steadily declining. The slide has been disastrous for temporary workers forced into unemployment. It’s also led to layoffs and cutbacks for staffing companies and trickled down to other workforce solutions ecosystem players such as payroll funding providers.
