After a long dry spell, it finally rained at Moss Hollow Lake. The moisture brought a flush of mushrooms and I've enjoyed foraging the hills for edible deliciousness. This week I found my first chanterelles, in addition to a bunch of golden oyster mushrooms. While morels in the spring are my favorite, these are pretty special. I fry the chanterelles and the golden oysters in a dry cast iron pan to draw out the moisture, then toss in some butter and sauté until they're a beautiful brown. If you want to kick it up a notch, add a bit of minced garlic. Perfecto!

Our garden is starting to produce. While I love all the fresh vegetables, I like to capture the season to savor a little later too. My banana peppers are coming on strong, so I pickled up a batch o…

Two weeks ago, I filled a Mason jar with chive blossoms from my garden and added plain white vinegar. I have to admit, the jar looked pretty and I was pleased with myself. It has now turned the mos…

It's the magical time of year in the Driftless Region and that means morel mushrooms. I look forward to mushroom hunting every spring because it reminds me of my mom. She LOVED walking the woods, foraging for morels. She also loved dredging them in flour and frying them in butter until just crisp. First morel of the season. I didn't find many my first outing this spring, but there were enough for my dinner....

Rhubarb Shortbread Rhubarb is my current seasonal obsession. I love the tart, tangy, distinctive flavor. I adore the colors - the ruby reds and pale greens. For me, it signals spring turning to summer in Lone Rock, Wisconsin. While we don't have a rhubarb patch (yet), our neighbors John and Marina Rosenberg have a robust crop which they kindly share. The first thing I made was rhubarb shortbread....

In our house, soup was not for supper. The evening meal was about meat, potatoes, a vegetable of some kind and, usually, dessert. Soup was for lunch and a mainstay on snowy winter Saturdays. My mom made the best chicken soup with homemade noodles and her potato soup with egg-drop dumplings was one of my favorites. Of course, chili was regularly in the rotation; so was bean soup....

In our house, Sunday night meant pizza. It meant the treat of eating on a blanket (to protect the fabulous green s**g carpet) in front of the television, watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and The Wonderful World of Disney. Sometimes the pizza was homemade. Sometimes it was frozen (usually Tombstone). It always had a super crispy crust and just a few basic toppings....

One of the things I love about fall is the opportunity to harvest heirloom apples from the orchard my Grandpa Martin planted up on our far ridge more than 60 years ago. The trees are old and broken down but Steve mows around them, creating a funky labyrinth so we can watch the fruit ripen and pick it without too much trouble. [ 232 more words ]

Our garden produced plenty of peppers and cucumbers this summer, so I experimented with a variety of small-batch pickling projects . I tried my hand at bread & butter pickles (a couple of different ways), sweet & sour shish*to peppers (two versions), tangy peppers (three methods) and even fermented pickles in an open crock. My taste testers (Pete, Gab, Grace, Nate, Caroline, Tim, Lu, Mason and Robert) were kind and said they liked them all...even the too tangy peppers. [ 271 more words ]

Summer means sweet corn. I procure mine -- literally fresh from the field -- at Peck's Farm Market near Spring Green. I love corn on the cob -- grilled or boiled -- slathered in butter. Leftovers (if there are any) make a great corn salad or an awesome corn salsa. The other day, I had a few extra ears so I decided to try corn soup. [ 236 more words ]

For a couple glorious weeks every July, the black caps ripen. I understand the rest of the world calls them black raspberries. They can be a job to pick with the heat, all the thorns, bugs and critters, but they’re worth it. This year we located several patches and had a good harvest. Black caps are good with just about everything, on cereal, mixed with yogurt, topping ice cream or just by themselves. [ 322 more words ]

I have a library of 100-plus cookbooks. I love to read through them on rainy days or while watching televised sports with Steve. My mom, who put a lot more meals on the table than I ever will, relied mostly on her box of recipe cards from family and friends, the "Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book," and a few local church cookbooks. I haven't made any new recipes this week so I thought I'd write a bit about our place here in Wisconsin. Decades ago my grandfather, James Martin, started an apple orchard on our back ridge and my Mom used to pick apples there when she was young. The orchard is old, broken down and these days mainly provides cover and food for our busy deer herd and other animals. [ 185 more words ]

My Mom was a lifetime Driftless cook and a good one. So I wondered how she would take to New Orleans and it's special cuisine. When my parents first made the trip to New Orleans, I was delayed out of town so Steve had them for dinner. He took them to Clancy's, one of the great restaurants tucked away in an old corner grocery in uptown New Orleans. [ 121 more words ]

Growing up, I fondly remember my Grandpa Martin heading to the lake to fish after he finished chores on the farm. When he returned with a pile of blue gills, Grandma would pan fry the tiny fillets (usually along with potatoes) for supper. Tonight, Steve treated me to freshly-caught fish from that same lake. Great dinner. Great memories.

Steve and I have been hunkered down in Wisconsin for nearly four weeks, isolating ourselves from the coronavirus...and, necessarily, friends and family. Luckily, we have two chest freezers full of venison, lamb and pork. I've enjoyed simple yet decadent dinners of lamb chops and venison tenderloins. I've made big, beautiful roasts (which provide a week's worth of yummy leftovers). Because we have a LOT of ground venison, I've turned my attention to meatballs. [ 100 more words ]
