A very interesting set up for tonight as a strong cold front blasts into the Commonwealth. Winds will gust up to 40 mph tonight and rain and snow showers move across the state overnight. Temperatures will rapidly drop with most us seeing lower to mid 20s by tomorrow near London and wind chills flirting with the single digits. With the precipitation and the rapid drop of temperatures, we could see a flash freeze. Watch out for slick spots overnight and early Thursday morning.

12/05/2024

A strong cold front is expected to bring rain, then wintry mix then all snow by Thursday morning. Instances of flash freeze and snow squalls are possible with this cold front. For more details, please see our latest briefing packet here: www.weather.gov/media/jkl/DssPacket.pdf

This is gonna be one of those snow forecast that gives meteorologists a major headache because within the same county you may have nothing all the way up to 2 inches. For most of the state south of I 64: You’ll see a dusting to a half inch. A few isolated spots could see up to 2”s, and in the higher elevations a general 1-2”s looks like a safe bet.

Potential for an NTI day on Tuesday for a lot of kids in the Bluegrass thanks to a quick moving clipper system. I’ll look at the data tomorrow and make a more detailed post Monday afternoon.

I think most of Eastern Kentucky won’t see much from this system, but some light accumulations are possible tonight.

I think most of Eastern Kentucky won’t see much from this system, but some light accumulations are possible tonight.

Accumulating snow will be possible as a clipper system moves through the Commonwealth. Areas mainly along and north of the Mountain Parkway are forecast to see an inch of snow with the highest snowfall totals along the I-64 corridor.

*Tap,tap, tap* Does this thing still work? So after a long hiatus, you know a snow forecast will drag me back in action. It's an interesting set up with an area of low pressure developing towards the Great Lakes and should bring rounds of wintry mix to to the state Thursday morning and afternoon and change it over to all snow Thursday evening through Friday morning.

Now, the snow can be heavy at times... and a heavy snow can overcome some warm ground to get a light accumulation, but we have a really warm ground right now. Check out the 2nd map, soil temperatures as of 7:00 p.m. at 2 inches deep. You will see it's still well into the upper 50s across the state... so we've got to drop about 25-30 degrees in 24 hours if we want some good sticking.

I am thinking here in London, a good dusting to half inch is likely on the ground by Friday morning and it will be mainly on the grassy surfaces. Roads should be fine. The big winner will be up in the higher elevations along the Virginia border, where they will likely pick up 1-3"s. Central KY and most of Eastern KY will probably be in the coating to an inch range, although a few spots in Eastern KY could push closer to two inches if everything lined up just right.

Best chances of a Snow Day for Friday will be down in Harlan, Letcher and Pike counties. I'll post another update if necessary tomorrow, but I don't think this is going to be a big impact snow... just a good early start to the season.

A lot of folks wondering about Helene... I'm thinking down here in southern Kentucky (London to Hazard to Pikeville), we will likely see the worst of it blow in between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. A few spots may see 70 mph wind gusts. We also deal with heavy rain through the morning. By the afternoon the rain will become lighter and more scattered, with gusts around 20 to 40 mph.

If you are in the city of Corbin, heads up, you have got a storm that is likely producing large hail. Heading your way. This will likely hit between 640 and 7 o’clock.

Multiple round of showers and storms have brought heavy rainfall to areas along and south of the Mountain Parkway over the last couple of days; therefore, a Flood Watch has been issued through 6 AM August 1st. Areas that experience additional rounds of showers or storms could see instances of flash flooding.

Heading to the movies this weekend? If you’re planning on seeing the new 🌪️ 🌪️, keep an eye out for NOAA! (Yes, we make some cameo appearances!)

And check out our new page, noaa.gov/twisters to find out:

What’s it like to be an actual storm chaser? Can a tornado really catch fire? Are twin tornadoes possible? Is it possible to “tame a tornado”? Who actually studies these storms? (We’ll give you a hint for that last one… we do!)

06/23/2024

We have a slight chance of severe weather this evening in eastern Kentucky. Looks like the biggest threat is going to be wind, with a small potential of some large hail. We also see heavy rain and lightning with any storm that goes up today. Look like the best chance of storms will be between 4 PM and 10 PM, be sure to have a way to get warnings during that time and stay weather aware.

An approaching cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms (including much needed rain) to eastern Kentucky this afternoon/evening. Some of these thunderstorms could become strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts being the primary threat. Brief heavy rainfalls are also possible as storms move over.

06/01/2024

Upcoming changes in our weather pattern will bring unsettled weather to eastern Kentucky once again for the next several days. The additional cloud cover and rain will tend to keep temperatures down over the weekend before increasing through the upcoming week.
