Thanks to everyone who listened to our first season of the podcast.

I have been itching to get back to it and this time, I want to talk about Doug Six and his death in the 1990's. If you remember that event, let's talk. You can hit that chat button, or send an email to [email protected]

What do you think about this?

Adnan Syed, subject of 'Serial' podcast, is released after his conviction is vacated

Syed was 18 when he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Lee was murdered in 1999 when she was also 18.

"Everyone was convinced that Dale Johnston had murdered his stepdaughter and her fiancé in cold blood. If we’re going to own the responsibility of taking another human being’s life, we better be sure we have the right person, beyond a shadow of a doubt. And yet, they pursued and accused the wrong man for decades. How can we ever be sure that we get it right if Dale Johnston – the man so maligned for years and years – was innocent all along? The death penalty simply must not continue if we are so prone to error."

This is from an article that Dale Johnston's stepson, an Ohio pastor, wrote last month about the death penalty.

You can read it in it's entirety here:
https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2022/08/25/family-member-of-death-row-exoneree-speaks-out/

What are your thoughts on the death penalty?

Grove City First Baptist Church Associate Pastor Bryan Corbett reflects on his stepfather's time on death row before being exonerated, saying, "The death penalty simply must not continue if we are so prone to error."

Here are a few photos to look back at in the past on this lovely Monday morning.

First, thanks to Ross Anderson for sharing the photo of the old Falls Mills Bridge coming down.

Second, the gates to Logan. It has been many years since we have had occasion to drive by there, so I don't recall seeing them. Are they still there? I do recall there being a dramatic accident at the set on the south end of Logan before we moved away circa 2003.

Do you have photos of the Hocking Hills from back in the day you would like to share? We LOVE seeing the photos of the businesses that used to be there, the parades, the people, everything!

So, even if you don't have anything to add about the case, we would still love to hear from you and enjoy a look back at the town we grew up in.

Also, we are starting to research for season 2. Is there a story that stuck with you that you want to hear more about, or talk about? Send us a message and we will try to add it to our list.

Hey Happy Friday!
Here are some old newspaper clips to view on the case.

We really want to THANK you for your listening and following along!

I would even like to take a moment to thank the people who left 1 star reviews on apple and have jumped on the various social accounts to call me a tacky liar, disgusting, etc. That even helps spread the word by adding to the drama that has always surrounded this story.

Like Sara said in e10, this story is only as sensational as YOU make it.

It is the weekend, so if you aren't caught up, this is a good time to get caught up. Link to all 10 episodes in the comments.

If you have something to say, a question to ask, or an opinion to share feel free to call 419-777-1147 and leave a message OR email us at [email protected]

We would be thankful to anyone who has a minute and enjoyed the podcast to leave a 5 star review on apple, or to share the podcast on social media. We are going to be back soon with a collection of spooky true stories from the Hocking Hills and hope to find you guys with your ears on for that!

Did you get a chance to listen to episode 9 yet? Here's a picture of Dale during his 1984 murder trial with the map marked with the spot the bodies were discovered.

So, tell us. What do you think? Do you think Dale is guilty despite someone else confessing? Do you think Dale is innocent? Or do you have mixed feelings? Have your opinions changed over the years?

When I mentioned that there were over 700 newspaper articles that we referenced in researching this case, I was wrong. There are just so many. It might be upwards of a thousand at this point. It is interesting to see how Logan felt about the situation, and how it played out, compared to the rest of Ohio.

This is from the Athens Post, Jan 30, 1984 as an opinion of the scene in Logan. If you can enlarge it to read, do so. (APPALLING) I am going to try to grab a clipped version, which I will drop in the comments too.

You can also catch up on episodes right now, 8 is out. Ask Siri to play Township Falls!

If you remember this case, I would love to hear your opinions, but just send messages to the page, not me personally. You can call our recorded line also at 419-777-1147 with questions and comments.

This weekend I am looking through newspapers in Akron, Dayton, Cincinnati and Lancaster to see what pops up. I have heard from quite a few people that they love seeing these old clips, so here are a few for you to peek at. I took the liberty of highlighting a few things that caught my eye.

And as a side note, if anyone ever wants to make a peace offering to me, follow the lead of the Johnston family, a puppy is a guaranteed way to melt the ice. 😍 I wonder what kind of dog it was?

You can catch up on episodes right now. 7 came out this week!

Here are some more newspaper clippings, and pdf versions of some articles.

You might like to look them over while you catch up on episodes? We dropped 7 last night.

I especially enjoyed the article titled Inmates' release shocks town, victim's family. I think it perfectly captures the vibe of the case, the attitudes and the atmosphere of the town. Some of those attitudes prevail even today; nearly 40 years later.

We appreciate everyone who has gotten in touch or had an opinion to share; even those that are negative. No, we aren't professional podcasters. We are just people with opinions. We have a few episodes left, and would love to include some of those opinions, thoughts and memories. Keep getting in touch!

We have episode 7 out tonight; listen to it wherever you get your podcasts. Or you can hear it at the link in comments.

I have been looking back at all the newspaper clippings I found for this podcast, and this is the one I found most interesting today.

Remember in an earlier episode when we talked about how Annette was reported to be a drug informant in Logan and had even been threatened to the point she was afraid to ride the bus? I didn't know what to think of that. But now, I think maybe that was actually true.

And then, we talked about how the kids supposedly talked to a r**e crisis center? I really wanted to find some report or record of that visit.

Well, I found several articles about the young couple going to a drug abuse center in Perry county several times, and making a report. Here is one of them pictured below.

As they were leaving, Miss Cooper was reported to be heard saying that "Dale would be madder than a raging bull. If he didn't do anything to the person himself, he would at least go to the police about it, to make a report. If no one else believes us, I know he'll help us."

This happened on the morning of... October 4th, 1982, hours before the teens were murdered.

I just thought it was interesting. This report was found in The Dayton Journal Herald.

It paints a different narrative of what I expected I might find. But, then again, this too could just be made up like so much else was. The woman who filed the report said that Hocking County did not follow up with her when she made the report.

07/20/2022

In a recent episode we mentioned Doug Six.

Does anyone want to talk about his life or murder? We are thinking about doing a second season about Doug. He was my cousin, and I was a teen when he died and have often thought about what happened to him, and how there was no conviction for his murder.

We would love to hear from you about what you remember, heard, or thought about it all.

Also, it would be great to leave some memories of who he was after all this time. Plus, a quick Google search literally pulls up nothing on the case.

This isn't a happy story; it has no redeeming ending.

But, it is a story, sourced from the news; the essays, the books, the documentary, and from conversations.

I would tell you that you can't make this stuff up; but, obviously a lot of this was made up by someone. Just not me. I am only telling you what I found from researching. And, every bit of this info is available to anyone who cares to dig for it.

Library cards open a world of possibilities; especially for newspaper archives!

I will keep sharing clips and screenshots of the archives with you, so you can read some of them without deep dives online or hours at a microfilm machine.

Also, I have heard from maybe 5 people who "hate" this podcast. Several have asked what is wrong with me to want to dig up all this old news, and then there is the fact that maybe I am Pro-Dale, and think he was presumed guilty before he ever entered the court system.

But, that is the thing about opinions. We all have them.

You can listen to the first 6 episodes where-ever you listen to podcasts. If you are new to podcasts, visit the link in comments, you can listen to all 6 right on the site.
