Patrick Mitchell 1958-2024
Dear RADIOLEX Family,
We are grieved to bring you the news that Patrick ‘Fryday’ Mitchell—our beloved volunteer, former employee, and show host—died on September 12.
Patrick was a compassionate performer, writer and photographer with an easy smile and a giant heart for his community.
Patrick was one of the founding volunteers of RADIOLEX. He was host of the long-running ‘Kiss of Lyfe,’ a feel-good show featuring two hours of old-school soul, R&B, and Motown.
In 2022, Patrick stepped into a staff role of Production Manager. In 2023, Patrick started the show ‘I’m Too Old for This’ with friend and co-host Debora Logan Lawson.
A creative maverick, Patrick got his start in radio at WTLA-FM, a local station operated by the Urban League in association with cable access. He also hosted the morning drive at power U102.5.FM.
In addition to radio, Patrick was an accomplished actor and playwright, performing on and off stage for 40 years. He co-founded Message Theater, an African-American Theater company in Lexington. In addition to local theatre, Patrick performed on and off-Broadway, performing numerous lead roles including Othello and Malcolm X in "The Meeting.” His original play “The Waiting Room” premiered at the Lyric Theatre in 2023 directed by Joe Ferrell.
As a stand-up comedian, Patrick toured the midwest and worked with Jamie Foxx, Sinbad, and Mark Curry.
Patrick was also an award-winning, published photographer trained at Kentucky State University and The Photography Institute. His love of photography extended from studio and portrait work to capturing the life of the community.
But more than all this, he was our friend. He was a bright light in our community, and he was dedicated to the Voice of the People. He will be missed.
In sympathy,
All of us at RADIOLEX
