I’ve gotten a few questions from clients about what to do about the upcoming TikTok ban after yesterday’s ruling.
Some things to keep in mind:
TikTok isn’t giving up yet- the CEO said this most recent decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court.
President Elect Donald Trump had previously supported a ban but most recently vowed to “Save TikTok.” I’ve read a lot of articles about what that might mean, and the main takeaway is no one really knows, but it gives hope that he’ll figure out some way to keep it. (The ban is set to begin the day before Trump takes office unless Biden gives TikTok an extension, which doesn’t look likely.)
Assuming the ban happens, TikTok won’t disappear from everyone’s phones on January 19—it will disappear from app stores. So anyone who has already downloaded it will still have it and be able to use it, at least for a while. It will stop receiving updates and eventually stop working for U.S. users, but that’s gives us time to keep posting over there while we look for alternatives. Just watch your reach- as long as it’s doing well on TikTok, keep posting.
When it comes to alternatives to TikTok- chances are you’re already posting your TikToks to Reels, but don’t forget YouTube Shorts. YouTube has almost twice as many active users as TikTok in the U.S., and since YouTube just increased its time limit on shorts to 3 minutes- this is a great time to start testing the waters over there if you aren’t already.
TL:DR
1. Keep making TikToks. The U.S. has 170 million active TikTok users-that’s a lot of people you will still be able to reach.
2. Video content is still doing great on Reels.
3. Don’t sleep on YouTube. (Do people still say don’t sleep on things? I’m very hip.)
4. We don’t know what we don’t know. New platforms could pop up in 2025, or current ones could improve (Whoever is in charge of these things- PLEASE do something about the in-app video editing tools on Facebook and Instagram. TikTok makes editing videos so easy that I often use it for videos that aren’t even going on TikTok.)
And the last thing I always tell my clients- You don’t have to be on every app. Figure out which content formats work best for your brand and which ones you have the resources to do well, and do those.
