I’ve gotten a few questions from clients about what to do about the upcoming TikTok ban after yesterday’s ruling.

Some things to keep in mind:

TikTok isn’t giving up yet- the CEO said this most recent decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court.

President Elect Donald Trump had previously supported a ban but most recently vowed to “Save TikTok.” I’ve read a lot of articles about what that might mean, and the main takeaway is no one really knows, but it gives hope that he’ll figure out some way to keep it. (The ban is set to begin the day before Trump takes office unless Biden gives TikTok an extension, which doesn’t look likely.)

Assuming the ban happens, TikTok won’t disappear from everyone’s phones on January 19—it will disappear from app stores. So anyone who has already downloaded it will still have it and be able to use it, at least for a while. It will stop receiving updates and eventually stop working for U.S. users, but that’s gives us time to keep posting over there while we look for alternatives. Just watch your reach- as long as it’s doing well on TikTok, keep posting.

When it comes to alternatives to TikTok- chances are you’re already posting your TikToks to Reels, but don’t forget YouTube Shorts. YouTube has almost twice as many active users as TikTok in the U.S., and since YouTube just increased its time limit on shorts to 3 minutes- this is a great time to start testing the waters over there if you aren’t already.

TL:DR

1. Keep making TikToks. The U.S. has 170 million active TikTok users-that’s a lot of people you will still be able to reach.
2. Video content is still doing great on Reels.
3. Don’t sleep on YouTube. (Do people still say don’t sleep on things? I’m very hip.)
4. We don’t know what we don’t know. New platforms could pop up in 2025, or current ones could improve (Whoever is in charge of these things- PLEASE do something about the in-app video editing tools on Facebook and Instagram. TikTok makes editing videos so easy that I often use it for videos that aren’t even going on TikTok.)

And the last thing I always tell my clients- You don’t have to be on every app. Figure out which content formats work best for your brand and which ones you have the resources to do well, and do those.

A lot of people think they just need to know what they’re talking ABOUT. But when it comes to crafting posts and captions on your social media accounts, that’s useless if you haven’t nailed down exactly who you’re talking TO.

Do you know what your potential customer looks like? What do they care about? What problems do they have that you can solve? What social media platform do they use the most? What sort of music appeals to them? How do they think/talk? All of these things will help you develop the captions that speak to your audience’s wants and needs, and create the posts that will land in their feeds.

If you want your audience to hear you, you have to make sure you’re speaking in a voice they’ll listen to—and if you don’t know where to start, I can help!

I got to take part in a sales and marketing summit for one of my clients today to talk social media to their sales team—all about best practices, how they can help, and why it matters. I’m so excited to see what sort of pictures and videos they collect out in the field! AND they laughed at all my (very hilarious) jokes so it was a win all around.

When it comes to content strategy, it’s all about aligning your content with your goals. There's a lot to think about—how often do you want to post, what will you post about, what types of posts (video, image, reel, infographic, etc) do you need, etc. A content calendar can help you lay everything out and come up with an action plan.

It all started in 2012. I’d written a book, and needed to make myself more appealing to publishers. Enter social media marketing, back before we even called it that. Starting with Facebook and Twitter and gradually branching out to other emerging platforms as they popped up, I realized pretty quickly that I had a knack for identifying my audience and crafting material to connect with them. (I got that book deal, by the way. 😉)

Sharpening my skills in writing, photography, and videography led to a career in social media management. From creating content to attract Lexington’s local foodies to Rolling Oven 🍕; to developing and growing the social media platforms for Shriners Hospitals for Children—Lexington 🏥 from scratch; to establishing my own online identity as a young adult author📚and true crime podcaster 🎙️; to now, establishing my social media management company 🌱—the culmination of years of learning and growing in an industry that is constantly evolving.

That’s my story. Now I want to help you tell yours. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your brand, I’d love to talk to you about how my narrative-driven approach can elevate your social media presence. ✨

New month, new holidays! I think we all get a little 🙄🙄 🙄about social media holidays—but don’t just look at them as a chance to use a hashtag. (In fact, we might want to throw out hashtags altogether, but that’s a post for another day.)

Don't feel like you have to mention the holiday itself, unless your goal is to gain some exposure by hopping on a trend. Otherwise, use this list as an exercise in coming up with creative ways to post something you might not have thought of before! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

International Thank You Day ❤️: thank your customers; offer a discount code or a freebie; thank your teachers, your parents, your partner, or anyone who’s helped you along the way; or twist it around Kanye-style and thank yourself for all your hard work.

Cheese Lovers Day 🧀: post a recipe; take yourself and/or your team out to a restaurant for a great charcuterie board; if you’re a restaurant, showcase a menu item; or take a different approach to “cheese” and post some dad jokes!

Self-Care Sunday 🛁: if you’re a spa or salon, offer a discount code or freebie; post your own DIY self-care ideas; post a pretty aesthetic reel featuring your shop, your home, or your workspace; share a hobby you do that lights you up.

MLK Day 🙏: post your favorite MLK quote; go volunteer somewhere in his honor and share your experience; make a video of your team talking about MLK or each sharing their favorite MLK quote

And if you need some help pulling your social media presence together to best represent yourself or your business, send a message and let's talk about how I can help!
