Yesterday was a very productive and successful day on the Flat Fire. Crews continued mop-up on the western flank of the fire and used existing roads to secure the northwestern side. The burn scar from the 2016 Pioneer Fire has limited fuel for fire spread on the northeastern side of the fire, but presents hazardous conditions for firefighters because of hazard trees and snags. Indirect dozer line is being constructed where crews cannot safely work.

Idaho Fish and Game saw this year’s sockeye return hit a record number—which is good news—but with an asterisk. That’s the highest sockeye return since fish counting started at the dam in 1975, topping the previous record of 2,786 fish in 2014.

Lyle and Erik Menendez shoot their parents, Jose and Kitty, to death in the den of the family’s Beverly Hills, California, home. They then drove up to Mulholland Drive, where they dumped their shotguns before continuing to a local movie theater to buy tickets as an alibi. When the pair returned home, Lyle called 911 and cried, “Somebody killed my parents!” The Menendez murders became a national sensation when the new television network, Court TV, broadcast the trial in 1993.
