New blog up based on a bit of a heated discussion I got into last night in one of the freeze dry groups. www.adviceandbeans.com We also got some restocks in. We're moving to rounded corners for all bags, so as we clear out the old inventory we'll eventually get to the new (we have new rounded corners for our core 7 mil bags from 5x8x3 to 8x12x4; put a note on your order if you'd prefer those). We are also introducing a couple of new bags for Freeze Dry sellers. Bags with smaller windows (less 02 passthrough) as well as hangholes for pegboards. We have 4x6x2, 5x8x3 and 6x9x3 in both matte black (5 mil) and Kraft (7 mil) as a test. If these do well we'll continue branching out into more sizes, colors and styles. Finally we have a new MRE style bag out at 10x7x3, which should be about 2 cups bigger than the 9x6x3, though I haven't measured exactly yet. If you have any questions please let me know, thanks!

Oh, Canada, eh? So we're trying something new. Shipping has gotten so ridiculous in the US, that it's more for some wholesale cases to ship to Bumblefoot, Washington that it is to Alberta, CA. That's good for those of you suffering under your dictator, as we're going to offer free shipping on cases to Canada on a test basis to see if it holds up. I don't know what your duties are, I know they're pricey, but I hope free shipping makes up for some of that. For now, I've just put up the 7 Mil cases, but if you want others, please let me know and I'll work up a new setup for those as well.

It's a separate checkout and payment setup, so you won't go through our normal website checkout.

Oxygen absorbers
Hi all! I just wanted to touch base with you today on oxygen absorbers.
How oxygen absorbers work:
1. They only target oxygen. Good thing because air is made of a mixture of gasses and of that mixture oxygen is the only one that affects food spoilage.
2. They work until they run out of energy or run out of oxygen to absorb. If they run out of energy they cannot work to remove oxygen. If they run out of oxygen they rest or hibernate until they sense oxygen, then back to work they go.
Because absorbers work as soon as the container opens, we recommend having a plan and staying on task start to finish. They start to lose effectiveness about 45 minutes after being opened. While the absorbers work from anywhere in the bag, we recommend putting them in last, so they are exposed to the open air the least amount of time. A zip top bag offers a convenient way to pushout the extra air and it also offers a temporary barrier against the outside air until you heat seal your bags.

Just remember that some items you store fill more compact like rice and beans. Items like flour and oats are more fluffy. However Items like elbow pasta have extra spaces for air. The spaces made by the open pasta create more spaces for air and in turn oxygen. These items will require a higher CC (cubic centimeter) count absorber.
How should unused absorbers be stored?
The clear bags they come in, because they are clear have a small air exchange rate. Guess what gas is in air? Yep, you guessed it oxygen. So, since there is a small air exchange rate the absorber is working on a very slow level. This is why they are unusable after long periods of storage. If you have unused absorbers, we recommend storing them in one of two ways.
1. Simply put them in a mylar bag, press out as much air as possible and heat seal.
2. Simply put in a canning jar with the two-piece canning lid. You want to use a size jar that will allow the least amount of air. Remember we want them to use the least amount of energy before resting. If you don’t have a jar small enough, put dried rice or beans in the jar to help fill the space. You will hear a pop when the jar has sealed and the absorbers are resting.
