Smokey Bear turns 80 on August 9. In 1944 the creation of Smokey Bear was authorized by the Forest Service, and the first poster was delivered on October 10 by artist Albert Staehle. In the first poster, Smokey was depicted wearing jeans and a camping hat, pouring a bucket of water on a campfire. The message underneath read, “Smokey Says – Care Will Prevent 9 Out of 10 Forest Fires!” The living symbol of Smokey Bear was a five-pound, three month old American black bear cub who was found in the spring of 1950 after the Capitan Gap fire, a wildfire that burned in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico. Smokey had climbed a tree to escape the blaze, but his paws and hind legs had been burned. Local crews who had come from New Mexico and Texas to fight the blaze removed the cub from the tree. At first he was called Hotfoot Teddy, but he was later renamed Smokey, after the icon.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was involved in a rollover crash Monday morning on Chicago's Tri-State Tollway.

The crash involved the Wienermobile and a Hyundai.

The Wienermobile struck the car, lost control and rolled over. No injuries were reported.

There's going to be a screening of the 1987 cinematic masterpiece "Mannequin" tonight in Philadelphia . . . which is where much of the movie was filmed. And a special guest from the movie will be in attendance. Can you guess who?

Will it be Kim Cattrall? Andrew McCarthy? James Spader? The answer is: None of the above.

The special guest will be Emmy . . . THE MANNEQUIN.

Emmy is an actual mannequin used in the movie. She has survived the decades and can now be found modeling clothing at a local shop called South Fellini. When she's not attending movie screenings, that is.

There's a Red Lobster in Pueblo, Colorado, that recently received an orange lobster. Orange lobsters are 1 in 30 million.

According to the general manager, orange and blue lobsters are supposed to be filtered out of shipments but this one slipped through. The crew at the Red Lobster named him Crush, after the Orange Crush defense of the Denver Broncos.

Crush will live the rest of its life at the Denver Aquarium.

Fire up the grill y'all...it's National Hot Dog Day!!

When we think of summer, hot dogs come to mind almost immediately. It’s just part of the overall experience. A summer day at the amusement park or at a baseball stadium pairs nicely with a hot dog. Anyone can enjoy the age old American favorite food any time of year. Sure, hot dogs can be purchased and enjoyed at any time of the year, however on July 17 is absolutely the day we hold them in the highest regard.

I guess this is the one bright spot in the new Superman movie. ABC News correspondent Will Reeve will cameo in James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" movie as a TV reporter.

Why does that matter? Because Will is the son of everyone's FAVORITE Superman, the late Christopher Reeve.

Christopher played Superman in the classic 1978 movie and its three sequels. In 1995, he had a near-fatal horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

He worked as an advocate for the disabled until his death in 2004.

As you head out to enjoy fireworks celebrations this Independence Day, it may be a good idea to leave your pet at home. Local humane societies say fireworks frighten animals and a record number go missing on the holiday. Here are some tips to keep your pup or kitty safe:

*Walk dogs early
*Create a safe space with the windows and curtains closed
*Turn up the radio or TV
*Keep cats inside
*Make sure they have hiding spaces
*If you do bring Fido or Fluffy out, make sure you protect them from the noise and flash of fireworks make sure they are wearing identification and are microchipped
*Do not leave them in car… besides the panic that may set in, it’ll be too hot
*For extremely excitable animals, you may want to talk to your veterinarian about tranquilizers. Use vet prescribed meds only.
*For families leaving on the holiday without their pet, board them or leave them with someone you trust.

During the holiday, there are up to 60-percent more lost animals reported. July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, please keep your pet safe.

• When we used to live in one room together, it was called a hall (like a community hall or a town hall). When an area was sectioned off and named (e.g. bathroom) the remaining space was still called a hall. Now that all the rooms are named (bedroom, kitchen, living room, etc) the leftover part of your house is still called a hall.

A 39-year-old engineer from the Netherlands fulfilled his lifelong dream . . . of building the world's longest bicycle. It's 180 feet and 11 inches long, and looks more like a steamroller than a bike.

The previous record belonged to a guy in Australia, for a now-pathetic 155-foot bike he built in 2020.

The deep archive of music articles on the MTV news website are gone. Paramount Global wiped the sight, sending many angry people to vent online. Included in the purge was the weekly “Mixtape Monday” column that ran for 10 years. On CMT’s website the same happened, only those articles about Country Music and its artists dated back farther. A former editor at MTV news posted “So, mtvnews.com no longer exists. Eight years of my life are gone without a trace. All because it didn’t fit some executives’ bottom lines. Infuriating is too small a word.” Music fans would frequent the sites to pull early info on their favorite artists.

Kevin Costner had a beef with the British royal family in the 1990s.

During his interview on “The Howard Stern Show” on Tuesday, Costner confirmed that a sequel to his hit 1992 film “The Bodyguard” with Whitney Houston was in the works with Princess Diana as his planned co-star.

However, Diana’s death in summer 1997 caused the project to be canceled — and he was being attacked by the royals, who didn’t believe that the princess was willing to do a Hollywood movie.

Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt is finally getting a theatrical release thanks to Warner Bros. The studio won the bidding war. The movie was made in collaboration with Formula 1, with filming taking place at races on the sport’s calendar and Pitt plays a former driver who returns to the circuit. The movie will hit offshore theaters next June, but a U.S. schedule is unknown.

Hulu documentary about the “Brat Pack” has generated interest in the movies that the group starred in. Now, Hulu is streaming nine of the films. While some of the most popular, like “The Breakfast Club,” aren’t on the schedule, “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” and “St. Elmo's Fire” are. Among "The Brat Pack" actors are Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Anthony Michael Hall and Matthew Broderick. If you haven’t watched the documentary “Brats” yet, it’s streaming now on Hulu as well.

Today is Flag Day. So, what is Flag Day? It's a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on the anniversary of the flag’s official adoption, June 14. ”Flag Day” was celebrated as a patriotic occasion for many decades, but it was President Woodrow Wilson who made the observance official by a presidential proclamation on May 30, 1916.

Andrew McCarthy's documentary about the Brat Pack in the '80s hit Hulu today. It's called "Brats".

Here are some highlights:

1. Andrew wore a WIG in the final scene of "Pretty in Pink". The ending had to be reshot to show him getting with Molly Ringwald, but he already cut his hair for his next role.

2. Demi Moore had a sober coach on the set of "St. Elmo's Fire".

3. Molly didn't participate in the documentary because she'd rather keep looking forward.

4. Emilio Estevez refused to do more movies with anyone from the Brat Pack after "The Breakfast Club", because he didn't want to be typecast.

5. The instrumental love song in "St. Elmo's Fire" hit #15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

6. Andrew had a crush on Ally Sheedy.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers say I-80 was a sweet mess after a semi-truck spilled a load of watermelons in the early hours on Monday. Troopers arrived at the scene at about 3 a.m., as the fruit that was spread across the highway started to attract the attention of hungry local wildlife. The Utah Department of Transportation posted pictures to socials and explained "It was a melon-choly morning on I-80 today. At 3 a.m. our team learned of this fruity spill and jumped into action in the early hours to reopen all lanes in time for the commute."

National eating champion Joey Chestnut will miss the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition in New York for the first time in more than 15 years because he violated his agreement with the company by signing up to represent a company that makes vegan hot dogs.

Chestnut is the biggest name in competitive eating and has won the Nathan’s event every year since 2016.

Nathan’s has said that they are done bending over backward for Chestnut’s demands because he has finally gone too far by signing up to endorse the meatless hot dogs produced by plant-based food company Impossible Foods.

The organization Major League Eating (MLE), which oversees the Nathan’s event, noted that they have made a number of concessions to Chestnut to ensure that he attends their event in New York, including allowing him to film a Netflix special based during a non-Nathan’s contest, paid him a fee of $200K to attend last year, and even offered a $1.4 million contract to sponsor him for four years.
