At the Fortaleza, Brazil BRICS heads of state summit in July 2014, the member nations, along with the nations of South America and the Caribbean, agreed to create a New Development Bank, one of a network of new credit institutions to finance major infrastructure projects in the areas of transportation, energy, agriculture and scientific research and development. Chinese President Xi Jinping has placed the highest priority on the New Silk Road and the Maritime Silk Road, linking the Asia-Pacific region to Western Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
