Archaeologists excavating in the Mansion cellar recently found this complete wine bottle seal on top of an 18th-century brick drain. It is stamped “IOHN CUSTIS 1713”. John Custis was the father of Daniel Parke Custis, Martha Washington’s first husband.

These seals likely came from bottles brought to Mount Vernon by Mrs. Washington after she married George Washington. Our archaeology team has now excavated three 1713 seals, in addition to four seals stamped “I Custis.” The two different John Custis seals represent two separate purchases of wine bottles with seals.

We think of cattle as an integral and native part of North America. The truth is cattle were brought here, though when and from where have recently been brought into question. Check out this article on "Ancient DNA confirms diverse origins of early post-Columbian cattle in the Americas".

Before the arrival of Europeans, domestic cattle (Bos ta**us) did not exist in the Americas, and most of our knowledge about how domestic bovines first arrived in the Western Hemisphere is based on historical documents. Sixteenth-century colonial accounts suggest that the first cattle were brought i...

Dear Reader,

I cannot begin to express how grateful we are for your loyalty and readership. Producing Reliving History Magazine has been a fulfilling and wonderful experience. I know I speak for everyone here when I say that there is a great feeling of accomplishment in bringing so much history back to the world. To every one of our writers, I owe a debt of gratitude. Each one put their passion into words and imbued so much knowledge into the history community.

It is with heavy hearts we inform you that due to circumstances beyond our control, there will be no Winter 2021 issue, and Reliving History Magazine is closing. Over the last year, paper costs have steadily increased by over 56%. There has been a 5% increase since printing the Fall 2021 issue with an additional 8% on top of that being implemented in January. With no end in sight to these paper increases, as a small magazine, we cannot continue.

Because of this sudden end, subscribers are receiving a refund for the remainder of your subscription with us. The check is valid for 6 months, and after that, the account will be closed entirely.

The legacy of Reliving History will continue through the sharing of content, research, and passion for history. While we are unsure exactly what that looks like, we can say with every confidence that this is not the end of sharing information, even with the print magazine ending.

With our sincerest thanks and appreciation,

Abbie Samson
