So, we've come back from a little gap. Due to technical issues (changing from Mac to Windows) we weren't able to get this episode done on time. If things look or sound a little different, now you know why.
Anyhoo, join us this week as we talk about a cringey part of American history when people were exploited, and yet also very prosperous, on the sideshow circuit as Circus Oddities.

It's that time of year again where the air is cool, the leaves are falling, little kids run around to collect candy from strangers and a giant hairy bipedal monster stalks the woods and two idiots telling scary stories in the woods. Time for our 2024 Halloween Special.

The art found in ancient caves provides invaluable insight into the fauna of early civilizations, notably showcasing bison. Strange symbols, perhaps representing UFOs, intrigue many and pose the possibility of historic interactions with alien life. This fascination with the extraterrestrial has not waned; in contemporary culture, our representations of aliens reflect an ongoing interest in what lies beyond Earth. The assertion "They drew it because they saw it!" captures the essence of a universal human trait: a relentless curiosity that spans generations in search of answers to the mysteries of existence.

This painting was done by Tom McAssey, a witness of the spectral Black Cat of Killakee. He claimed that the phantom cat stared at him with burning red eyes.
The Black Cat of Killakee hails from Dublin. Where there were once meetings of the Hellfire Club, a Satanic cult in the area. The cult was known for sacrifices and one of these was said to be the sacrifice of a large black cat among the normal goats.
In 1968, the Killakee house was bought and renovated. When being renovated the workers claimed to see, more than once, a large, demonic looking cat. But when they would search for it, it was no where to be found. The creature would vanish in the blink of an eye. The woman that had bought the home with her husband began thinking her workers were just paranoid and superstitious; at least until her and her husband began to see it as well. The cat would appear to strangers and people staying in the home, snarling and hissing.

This statue was created by French sculptor Philippe Kaeppelin (1918 - 2011) and stands in Auvers, Haute-Loire, in France. The statue is made of bronze and was erected in 1995.
It depicts the famous battle between La Bête du Gevaudan and Marie-Jeanne Valet that took place on August 11th 1765. During the fight, Valet defended herself and her sister by stabbing the fearsome beast in the chest with a spear. While the strike did not kill the creature, it was an incredible act of bravery and Valet was able to save herself and her sister. The two girls escaped alive. Legend has it that La Bête stood on her hind legs, placing a paw over the wound and rolled into the river nearby - vanishing until her next kill.
A court was able to examine the spear that had been used. It had reportedly pierced at least three inches into La Bête's chest, as that was the amount of blood on the weapon. Valet's sister told the court that the monster was "the same size as a big farm dog, having a big flat head, black jaws with big teeth, throat white and grey neck. She was much bigger at the front than at the rear and had a black back."
