Extended forecastnfor Austin area as if Thursday 6 Feb 2025...1100pm CT.

Very warm Friday and Saturday with highs near 90 on Saturday. Then things get tricky...a cold front approach the area Sunday. At this point...most models seem.to think the front will stall over our area. The location will be key for determining whether you need a coat or can wear shorts. Areas north of front will be in 50s...while areas south of front will be in 70s and 80s. Going with the warmer solution for Sunday. A stronger front will move thru by late Tuesday. Decent chances of rain Tuesday and Wednesday.

Dewpoint temperatures have been in the single digits and 10s much of the day and evening (brown on map). As result, snow has been struggling to reach the ground. Dewpoints have been rising the past few hours and by 3am..dewpoints should be the highest (whitish shade within yellow circle) they will be in the Austin area ...so there should be just enough moisture for steady snowfall. Estimating most areas should get between a dusting of snow up to an inch ,with isolated areas getting higher totals.

Wintry precip has been struggling due to very dry air at the surface. As a result...models have been trending downward with snowfall totals. Both the HRRR and RAP short term models indicate no snow...or at least it enough to accumulate. The GFS still estimates 1 to 2 inches while the ECMWF is in between the others. Looking at current data...the moisture is slowly increasing, so from a out 1am to 6am..there should be just enough moisture for steadier snow showers across the Austin area. I would estimate most will get at least a dusting to an inch by morning...with isolated higher totals.

Forecasted snowfall totals as predicted by two forecast models....Austin may get 1 to 3 inches while Houston...if these models verify..may get 6 to 8 inches. These forecasts may change as the amount of moisture in atmosphere, timing of freezing temps and timing of the storm system could still change.

Cold week ahead for the Austin area and much of Texas. Arctic front will bring very cold conditions to much of the state. Best chance of snow for Austin will be after sunset Monday into Tuesday. Based on atmospheric profiles...looks like mainly snow for Austin. Freezing rain and sleet for San Antonio, Laredo and the coast. Houston also has a chance of snow.

I would prepare for slippery driving conditions (ice and snow) across much of Central, South and East Texas. I would predict many schools will close on Tuesday 21 January.

Below is a list of districts and universities that have already announced that they will be closed.
