Happy New Year to all of our readers.
It is about time.
After 13 editions as editor, with this issue I am hanging up my 580 Monthly hat — almost. I do have plans to offer Something to Savor recipes for the next two editions.
That will make it an even 50 editions and 150 recipes I have had the honor to contribute to this award-winning magazine.
It is appropriate that this issue is about making resolutions and following through to help others. After almost 19 years in Southwest Oklahoma — Lawton specifically — the one thing that is apparent and heart- warming is how many people take their time to help others. There are many opportunities, some highlighted in the issue, for those seeking ways to help.
As the editor, my resolution was to help to continue to bring awareness of the diversity, complexity and resilience of our Southwest Oklahoma communities. People from all walks of life and cultures live in this area. And I believe that the fine and talented writers and photographers, who have helped provide content for one or more issues of the magazine since 2019, have brought stories and images of the amazing peo- ple and groups who populate the area.
A heart-felt thank you to all the readers who support- ed and gave feedback over the years, as well as those who permitted the magazine to highlight their lives and talents. A special appreciation for the writers and photographers who made my life as an editor easier and made me proud. Two special thanks: one to Stephen Miller, who has photographed all of my recipes, and the other to Liz Davis, our design editor in Galveston, Texas. Finally, thanks to Dee Ann Patterson, for her advice and support.
Now it is time. Time for me to focus on my return later this year — after almost 55 years away — to New England and my family. While I plan to continue writing and cooking wherever I am, I will be leaving friends I consider family but hope to stay in touch.
“Parting is such sweet sorrow,” wrote William Shakespeare and it is for me. But it will never be a
complete parting as long as I can stay in touch with my “family” here.
Great plans are afoot to make the magazine even better for our readership and for the community. Stay tuned for Volume 5 starting with the February edition.

580 Monthly

580 Monthly is a publication of The Lawton Constitution.

Our goal for 580 Monthly is to create engaging stories about the people and places that shape Lawton’s personality. We deliver deep, involved storytelling from a talented pool of contributors and weave those stories together with art by some of the most gifted photographers this side of the Red River. Every issue of this magazine brings you featured stories centered around a resonant theme. While these themes may at times be universal, the stories will focus on how those themes connect to our community here on the prairielands of Southwest Oklahoma.
