Revelation is hanging up his tracking gear and officially retiring.

Not unlike all of us as we age, he has slowed over the last couple of years but never quit and was always so happy to get back out there this time of year. This season, albeit happy to get out, his recovery time after a track was very slow and very painful. While I know he would keep going if I asked him to, there comes a time that we, as their best friend, have to throw in the towel for them. That time is now. I am grateful for the many memories and lessons we shared over the years.

When we first started out together, Rev was one of just a handful of known blood tracking dogs in the State of Missouri. Currently in Missouri there are over 20 dogs trained in blood tracking and game recovery and that number is rapidly growing.

During his 14-year career, Rev made countless hunters happy by successfully recovering 200+ deer.

Next up, Aidan and Benny Mae. They have been lucky enough to watch and learn from the old vets and will no doubt do an even better job than their predecessors.

Happy Retirement, Rev.
You're a good cowboy.

Unfortunately this season we are probably not going to track a lot. Being busy guiding hunters, Rev has gotten too old for long tracks and the heat and Benny Mae being is highly capable but last year became less than interested. I hope it was just a "teenager phase" for her. We will be referring hunters to Broken Arrow Game Recovery, LLC out of Cameron Mo. I have been with their dog Mable on tracks and she is awesome and focused.

I will keep my phone on if you have questions.

If shot is questionable and didn't see deer fall, back out for an hour at least then check shot sight.
-Give gut/liver shots 10 hrs.
- If you run out of blood do not search more than 75 yards around last blood.
-Older deer will back track and observe down wind of their own blood trail to be able to escape as the coyotes try untangle the confusion of the back track.
-Don't lie/mislead tracker to get them out there. Their dog will tell on you.

Thanks for all the tracks hopefully we will be back at it.

Large rifle at a moderate range? Sure, shoot him. But honestly if you call a tracker and they found out you intentionally made a shot like this with a crossbow or bow, especially over 20 yards, most experienced trackers will likely decline the track depending on other information and evidence.

Below is a rough example of the skeletal obstacles. Not shown, is the heavy muscular walls with little vital areas before entering the ribcage.

Please spare me the, " ...rage broadheads will get him, field dress and package the meat..." comments.

Rev and Aidan got it done this morning.

So I have been feeling sorry for Rev being too old for the busy season, so I told Aidan to run Rev behind me and Benny. We come to a spot where Benny(loves to track) picks her head up and looks up wind then continues to track. I look back to that spot and see Rev(loves to find deer) and Aidan starting to walk up wind. Benny is still on the actual track and she starts to veer back toward where they went. I hear Aidan yell in the distance, "Found him."

So I want to point out that, Aidan and Rev are cheaters.😆

It is greatly appreciated when the hunter understands that a blood tracking dog doesn't cure a misplaced shot.

Do not consult fb bow hunter pages and such for tracking tips, unless you want idiots to comment with counter productive information. Don't get it from a guy who tracks one or two deer a year and gets their information from opinion pieces in outdoorlife.

You can text/message me or get on Missouri Blood Trackers page there is a lot of info on there. Most any tracker will be glad to share the information they know from actual tracking experience and study.

Tale of two different tracking dogs. Rev(husky/ Australian shepherd) loves to find deer and the track is a necessary inconvenience. Benny Mae (bloodhound) loves to just track and the deer means the track is over.
