Billy Mills Middle School implemented building lockdown protocols at approximately 11:15 a.m. this morning, in response to a social media report of a gun on-campus.
Local law enforcement responded, including officers from the City of Lawrence Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, and Kansas Highway Patrol.
Families, staff, and students, received an emergency alert notification, via ParentSquare, informing them of the incident and lockdown status just after 11:30 a.m. The school remained on lockdown while law enforcement investigated the report and completed a search of the entire campus. A status update was shared with the school community 25 minutes later, with the building still following lockdown protocols.
Out of an abundance of caution, officers directed that the school be dismissed for the day to allow for a thorough sweep of the building. Families were informed at approximately 12:25 p.m. of an early dismissal protocol, with students and staff relocated to the school’s football field. Students will be picked-up either by bus, or parent/guardian.
