Hit-and-run fatality crash UPDATE

After an extensive investigation, which included examining evidence and responding to numerous tips from the public, on Sunday, Nov. 9, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the suspected vehicle and driver involved in Thursday’s hit-and-run crash outside of Lawrence that killed 20-year-old University of Kansas student Elsa McGrain.

Elsa was struck and killed while running in the 1700 block of E 1500 Road, on Thursday, Nov. 6. After striking Elsa, the suspected driver left the scene. The Sheriff’s Office worked diligently on this case and has made an arrest.

Detectives are working with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, and any information at this time would appear on the Booking Recap Report at DGSO.org.

The Sheriff’s Office thanks area law enforcement agencies for their assistance in this investigation, as well as members of the community who responded with possible tips and shared information.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to extend our deepest sympathies to Elsa McGrain’s family members and friends during this incredibly tragic time and would ask the community to continue to support them.
