Today is the birthday of singer-songwriter Johnny Russell (January 23, 1940 – July 3, 2001). Russell wrote songs recorded by Burl Ives, Jim Reeves, Jerry Garcia, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and most famously Buck Owens, and The Beatles ("Act Naturally"), and George Strait (“Let's Fall to Pieces Together”). His recording of his song "Rednecks, White Socks, and Blue Ribbon Beer" was his only entry in the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles, at Number 4. He is also known for being the first one to record "He Stopped Loving Her Today", in some surveys named as the greatest country song of all time and the biggest hit for George Jones in 1980, but his label refused to release it.

UPDATE: LOUD BOOM HEARD IN SEVERAL COUNTIES OVER THE WEEKEND NOT AN EXPLOSION AT GRP PLANT

Thousands of people across several northeast Georgia counties reported hearing a large boom over the weekend Saturday night. At one point on social media, it was thought there was an explosion at the GRP plant in Carnesville. WLHR News has confirmed that was not the case.

GRP plant manager for the Carnesville and Comer plants David Groves, confirmed late Monday afternoon that there was no explosion of any kind at the Carnesville plant over the weekend. We have also spoken to people living close to the plant who were home all weekend.

One couple said they heard nothing Saturday or Saturday night. Another person who is a former GRP employee who lives across from the plant said they heard the loud boom but it did not come from the GRP plant and there was no explosion there.

Additionally, Sheriff Steve Thomas tells WLHR News he had deputies patrolling the area around the GRP plant on Hwy 198 all weekend and they neither saw nor heard anything in the area of the GRP plant to indicate any sort of incident at the plant.

One possible explanation is that it may have been a sonic boom from F-16’s being tested by the Lockheed Martin plant in Greenwood, South Carolina south of Anderson County.

Earlier this month, a spokesman for Lockheed Martin told FOX Carolina News they were testing F-16s prior to sellinf them. The Spokesperson indicated that F-16s have the capability of traveling faster than the speed of sound, which would cause a sonic boom.

At the time, thousands of people in the Upstate also reported hearing a loud boom that shook the ground and their homes.

WLHR News will continue to research the loud boom heard Saturday and bring you any more information if and when we get it.

FRANKLIN COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY PLANS POLITICAL FORUM FOR MARCH

The Franklin County Republican Party has announced the date for a Political Forum with all candidates running for County offices.

Party member Angela Whidby said the forum will be on Saturday, March 23 at Franklin Springs City Hall.

Whidby said it’s an opportunity for the public to come out and hear the candidates for each office and ask questions.

“Everyone will have a chance to write down any question that they would like to ask the candidates. It needs to be a question for all candidates (in a race), not just one particular person. It’s got to be geared for all candidates in the race, such as the Sheriff’s race, it has to be for all three people. Then they will be given to the moderator who will go through the questions, and he will be the one to ask the questions. Then the candidates will be given time to answer,” she explained.

The Franklin County Political Forum will begin at 11:30a on March 23.

Before that beginning at 9a, the Republican Party will hold their Precinct Convention and elect officers for this year.

Qualifying for the County races takes place Monday, March 4 through Friday, March 8.

County races will be held on May 21.

Again, the Franklin County Political Forum sponsored by the Franklin County Republican Party will be held Saturday, March 23 at 11:30a at Franklin Springs City Hall and is open to the public.

Anyone with questions can contact Whidby at 404-427-1082.

PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY FOR THE FRANKLIN SPRINGS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

The City of Franklin Springs is gearing up to celebrate its Centennial this year.

At their meeting last week, the City Council heard from Mayor Lee Moore regarding plans for the celebration.

Moore told the Council that while the main event or events are planned for this summer, the City wants to begin now to celebrate by holding a monthly drawing for citizens.

“The first thing that we want to do is I would like to every month draw a citizen’s name; not a customer but a citizen who lives in Franklin Springs, who has a utility bill. Every month draw a name. We’ll have a pot and have all the names in the pot. And whoever gets their name drawn gets a $100 credit to their utility bill,” Moore explained.

Moore said he and the council will be meeting with the Franklin Springs Downtown Development Authority in the coming weeks to plan events for this summer’s celebration.

In the 1800s, Franklin Springs was a popular travel spot with its beneficial mineral, sulfur, and freestone springs.

By 1890 Franklin Springs’ resort had two hotels, a skating rink, two pavilions, and about 15 private residences on about 87 acres.

The reputation of Franklin Springs as a health resort was spreading, and people from Augusta, Savannah, Atlanta, towns in South Carolina, and even as far south as New Orleans, were coming to derive benefits from its health-giving waters.

Faith in the springs diminished as other health remedies became available. The Springview Hotel was offered for sale.

According to HMdb.org, the nationally famous Methodist evangelist Lorenzo Dow spoke to large crowds under the trees of Franklin Springs in 1802 and 1803. On February 22, 1803, the subject of his sermon was The Trinity where he spoke using three large tree branches as an illustration.

On March 1, 1918, the site was purchased by the Pentecostal Benevolent Association consisting of G.O. Gaines, Perry Sexton, Hugh Bowling, Josiah Allen, John W. Jordan, and Joseph C. Sorrow. It became the home of Franklin Springs Institute and was later renamed Emmanuel College. Last year, the college was renamed Emmanuel University.

The City of Franklin Springs was chartered on July 22, 1924.

WLHR News will be keeping our listeners updated on the events planned for the City’s Centennial Celebrations as they become available.
