I hate math. Almost to the point of irrationality.
I'm trying to take a placement test for college math. I legit barely understood the tutorial. When I tried to get into Mathplanet (an excellent free resource for math tutoring) I got viscerally angry.

I got angry because I was afraid. I'm afraid that if I place too poorly, I'll get put in a remedial class (which, to be honest, would probably be best) and it will greatly set back my ability to get my associates and transfer. I'm afraid that it will never make sense to me because, in nearly fifty years on this planet, it never has. It seems so unnecessarily complicated and overwrought. How people make a living at this is absolutely beyond me (and you have my respect).

None of this changes the fact that this is something I have to do. I'm hoping that if I'm willing to confess what I'm afraid of openly, we can destigmatize being afraid of things that may not make sense to others. And math scares the hell out of me. That's why it makes me angry.

Anyway, I"m glad I married a math whiz. I need to call my mother.

Spent the day out and discovered a new coffee shop not far from home. Knocked out a little writing, had an awesome breakfast burrito and decent butterbrew coffee. Also the staff here was some of the most courteous I've ever encountered in Vegas, and that's saying something.

I adopted what I call the Sandersen method, named for Brandon Sanderson. He has the life I want so I will do as he does. One of his methods is writing three thousand words a day.

One problem, though. I'm not Brandon Sanderson. I don't have his life or struggles. This means I have to do things my way. So when I was unable to write yesterday, I tried not to beat myself up too badly because negative self talk helps no one. Instead I resolved to write today, no matter what.

God layered on the challenges. I literally got no sleep last night. I napped fot about three hours. I still had to maintain my end of the marriage by keeping the house clean. I only just now wrapped my word count and I'm pretty wiped out. But the job is done.

You don't have to be smart, or fast, or even all that strong. Determination, that pure, raw, "I'm going to do this and no one can fu***ng stop me" will see you through all your deficits.

Plus, I finally wrote rhe most complicated character I've ever encountered in gaming and you know what? It turned out pretty good!

Brandon Sanderson raised forty-two million dollars on kickstarter, once.
Brandon Sanderson is goals. But I have a long way to go. In the meantime, something he does that I can emulate is write three thousand words I day. This was harder than I thought, and I worked well into the afternoon, but day one ended at just over 3.1k for the final draft of Dragon Age Resonance.
Let's see if I can do it again tomorrow.

I'm really proud of this setup. One of my goals is to have a charging station in every corner of the house, and to feel like I'm on the forest moon of Endor. Thanks to the magic of faux plants, I got both. This is my secondary work location in our living room. Both the phone and iPad are always good to go. I'm gonna need it, because school kicks back in, in a couple of weeks and I'm determined to get this fanfic out my Valentine's Day.

If you want something you've never had, do something you've never done. This is a big part of the energy I'm carrying into the New Year. I lost a little bit of Resonance's data and got the ultimate tongue-lashing from Cari. She gave me one of the her job aids to emulate because, as she keeps reminding me, "This is a business." Since I can't move much with a wounded foot, figured this was a good time to solidify how I'll meet this publishing schedule this year. I've never done this before, which is why I believe it's going to work.
