Prosecutors in Las Vegas express concerns about potential threats to witnesses in the case of Duane "Keefe D" Davis, charged with orchestrating the 1996 murder of hip-hop legal Tupac Shakur.
Davis seeks release on his own recognizance or bail not exceeding $100,000, but Prosecutors argue in their Opposition to Defendant’s Motion for Own Recognizance or Setting of Bail, filed on December 28, 2023, that Davis should remain in custody pending trial,
The State cites recorded jail calls, specifically a call between Davis and his son on October 9, 2023. The State alleges that Davis’s son mentions a "green light" order, indicating a credible threat to witnesses, a consciousness of guilt and a danger to the community.
The 180-page opposition emphasizes that a "green light" in “Davis's world” authorizes murder. As a result of that call, the federal government stepped in and assisted in relocating at least one witness. Davis's Public Defenders deny the threats, asserting there is no evidence of threats in the reviewed phone calls.
Proscutors also challenge Davis’s claims that he is “merely a prolific liar and not a murderer” Davis alleges in his Motion that his admissions in interviews and his memoir are not the true, and he made them for entertainment purposes and for monetary gain. Prosecutors, however, ask if Davis’s statements were for entertainment, then “who was he entertaining when confessing to LVMPD Homicide.” in 2009.
