In most Hollywood portrayals of stalking, the stalker is male, and his behavior is often excused or even romanticized. But what happens when the genders are reversed?

🎭 In Baby Reindeer, based on a true story, the stalker is a woman, and the narrative takes a darker turn. A man offers her kindness at his bar, and she responds with years of stalking, thousands of texts, interference in his relationships, and relentless harassment.

Unlike male stalkers in rom-coms, women in these roles are almost always portrayed as unbalanced or “crazy.” Think Swimfan, Fatal Attraction, or the “psycho ex-girlfriend” trope in My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

Yet, when male stalkers are portrayed, their actions are more likely to be romanticized, forgiven, or rewarded. Why the double standard? And what does that say about how society views stalking based on gender?

In 2022, Britney Spears endured a horrifying ordeal when her ex-husband, Jason Alexander, crashed her wedding day—live-streaming his break-in and trying to force his way into her bedroom with a box cutter in his pocket.

This wasn’t just a one-off incident. In the weeks leading up to the wedding, Alexander had trespassed on her property twice. Despite being charged with felony stalking, he served only 64 days in jail after taking a plea deal to a misdemeanor.
