Democracy isn’t just a bunch of abstract principles and dusty laws in some book somewhere. It’s the values we live by, and the way we treat each other – including those who don’t look like us or pray like us or see the world exactly like we do.

Jerron Hawkins and Noah McQueen grew up in DC and were two of our My Brother's Keeper Alliance mentees during my time at the White House. Since then, both have graduated from college and pursued careers that allow them to give back to their communities. It’s been great seeing their progress over the years.
