God Shakes Things Up Because it’s Wake up Time,
A Look at Haggai 2:1-9
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies Speaks
In verses 6-7, the Lord tells us He will shake the heavens, earth, land, sea and all the nations! Furthermore, in Amos 9:9, the prophet tells us God will shake (or sift) the house of Israel as well! He will leave no stone unturned when it comes to this shaking!
Is our world not beginning to shake right now? True, we may be further advanced and have things much easier than some generations throughout history, but we are feeling the very first tremors of a great earthquake of turmoil and chaos that is targeting our globe. Wars, rumors of wars, nation against nation, false Christ various weather events, soon-coming famine on a scale most of us in America have never begun to fathom, and all the other birth pains of Mathew 24 and other passages are happening with greater frequency and severity. The baby (world tribulation) is in the birth canal and could be birthed very soon. But why? Why is God determined to shake the heavens and earth, land and sea, Israel and the nations? Actually there are several reasons and we’ll take them day-by-day.
One reason God shakes things up is because of His great love for us, and His desire that we wake up to the reality of sinfulness. The Bible says God is not willing that any should perish. (2 Peter 3:9) But we live in a world that is too comfortable with sin. He wants our attention! He wants us to wake up and get out of the miry mess!
The apostle Paul understood the urgency:
11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
~Romans 13:11-12
What does God want? What does it mean to awake out of sleep? It means we awaken to our own sinfulness and repent! If you don’t know Jesus, you meet Him through repentance…confession of your sin and turning away from it. For those of us who know Jesus as Savior and Lord, our lifestyle should be one of repentance…willingly and constantly turning from sin in order to fully restore fellowship with our Lord.
It also means we let go of everything that we cling to but Christ. Are you clinging to fame and fortune? Career and success? Philosophy or political beliefs? Religion? Anything that takes up space between you and the One who sacrificed His life for you is a hindrance to relationship with Him.
What things must be let go in order to take hold of Christ Jesus our Lord? The choice is ours: hold tightly to the things of this world and be shaken loose from it all, or hold tightly to Jesus, forsaking the things of this world, in order to know Him more fully.
One reason God shakes the world is to wake us up!
