Episode 2- Mindset vs. mindfulness
What is mindset?
Generally speaking, mindset refers to the set of beliefs we have about ourselves and our potential. That could determine behavior, outlook, and mental attitude.
Mental flexibility. willingness to change or compromise.
Attitude. a way of thinking/feeling that reflects in behavior.
Bias, prejudice. favor in one thing/person/place over another, unfair.
Habitual ways of thinking. pattern behavior that is done constantly.
Self-talk or talk to others. introspection, ask “what” instead of “Why” or extrospection.
Challenge vs. opportunity. obstacles or inspirations.
What is mindfulness?
In contrast, mindfulness is the practice of noticing the degree in which we are identified with our ideas and beliefs. Focus on conscious or awareness of the present moment.
Free attention to the present moment. allow yourself/mind to exist in the now.
Increase self-awareness. understand oneself inside and impact on the outer world.
Non-judgmental observation. watching and noticing without critical viewpoint.
Non-attached—letting go. releasing attachments such as feelings, people or habits that no longer serve us.
Cultivate curiosity, openness. acquire curiosity, seek out new things and be open to trying and listening as well as understanding new things.
Response vs. reaction. know when to react and what kind of response a situation causes for.
What is self awareness?
Conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires. While consciousness is being aware of one's environment and body and lifestyle, self-awareness is the recognition of that awareness. Out of a 5,000 participant study done by a Harvard study group estimations of 10%-15% displayed criteria of self awareness.
Internal vs. External self awareness.
Internal self awareness: Represents how clearly we see our own values, passions, aspirations, fit with our environment, reactions including thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses and impact on others. We’ve found that internal self-awareness is associated with higher job and relationship satisfaction, personal and social control, and happiness; it is negatively related to anxiety, stress, and depression.
External self awareness: Means understanding how other people view us, in terms of those same factors listed above. Research shows that people who know how others see them are more skilled at showing empathy and taking others’ perspectives. Learn to take criticism as helpful instead of as problematic. Know when to decipher the difference between criticism and advisement.
It's a delicate balance of two distinct, even competing, viewpoints.
RESPONSE VS. REACTION
When is it ok to react? What is THIS that is causing you to feel in this manner? Did you feel good when you were reacting or what is it you were feeling at that moment? Would you go back and respond differently to the situation if you could?
