Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) announced that she plans to file articles of impeachment against Supreme Court justices after she returns to the House on July 8.

AOC’s announcement comes after many on the left, including President Biden, said the SCOTUS decision in Trump v. United States
‘undermined the rule of law’ and set a dangerous precedent. The 6-3 decision, with the 3 liberal justices dissenting, said that the president is immune from prosecution for all
‘official’ acts he or she undertakes as president of the United States.

The announcement also comes after a slew of rulings this session that gutted key precedents and compound on anger that has been building since the Dobbs decision. Chief among the impeachment arguments is the fact that the justices lied. Roe alone was endorsed by all of Trump’s conservative justices as a super-precedent, as they confirmed its legality and right to exist as the law of the land during their confirmations.

For an impeachment to go through, articles of impeachment would have to pass the House and then the justices would have to be tried in the Senate. With the current GOP majority in the House, it is highly unlikely that the impeachment would ever make it to the Senate. In history, there has only been one Supreme Court justice ever impeached:
Associate Justice Samuel Chase in 1805. He was acquitted in the Senate.

In all likelihood, the only way any of these justices will be held accountable is if the Democrats retake the House and hold the Senate during the upcoming election, then reintroduce articles of impeachment.
