UISD Announces Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Partnership with Smiles From Heaven

Laredo Texas .- United Independent School District is taking a stand in the fight against childhood cancer. The District held a press conference to announce the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. UISD also announced its ongoing partnership with Smiles from Heaven, a local childhood cancer organization devoted to helping families affected by childhood cancer and spreading awareness.

UISD Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz and members of the District’s Board of Trustees shared their thoughts on the importance of bringing attention to these diseases. Smiles from Heaven co-founders Ray and Betsy Sanchez told the story of their family’s struggle with childhood cancer when their daughter, Bella, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and ultimately succumbed to her illness. It was this tragedy that inspired them to create this organization and help other families who are suffering through the hardships of pediatric cancer.

Special guests at the event were families whose children have battled or are currently fighting cancer. Their stories were told in a video produced by UISD’s Public Relations Department.

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death from disease in children and adolescents.

According to the American Association for Cancer Research, the cancer death rate has declined by 70 percent among children (from birth to age 14) and 64 percent among adolescents (age 15-19) over the past four decades, thanks to advances propelled by cancer research. Despite those advances, thousands of children and adolescents will be diagnosed with some form of cancer, and many of them will die from these diseases.

Through this partnership, UISD hopes to educate the community about childhood cancer and all the resources available to help families fight these diseases. The District and Smiles from Heaven also wish to inspire people to donate money to cancer organizations and help fund research, as well as help children and families who need financial assistance for treatments.

The money is used to help families with travel expenses, meals, and lodging, as families most often have to go out of town to get the necessary medical treatment for their child. In addition, Smiles from Heaven provides grants, and organizes local support groups for families needing comfort, hope, and spiritual support.

La noche del 17, la ‘Luna de Sangre’
dominará el cielo de los dos Laredos

LOS DOS LAREDOS.- La noche del 17 de septiembre, los amboslaredenses podrán disfrutar de un gran espectáculo celeste: la luna se “llenará de sangre”… Bueno, no, en realidad se verá roja sobre el cielo de los dos Laredos.

¿Pero porqué se verá roja? Desde la noche del 17 y la madrugada del 18 de septiembre, habrá un eclipse lunar parcial que será visible en gran parte de México.

Según el Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE), en México, el evento comenzará alrededor de las 9:14 de la noche, hora de los dos Laredos, alcanzará su punto máximo a las 10:16, y concluirá en las primeras horas del 18 de septiembre.

El espectáculo celestial será maravilloso, pues coincide con el perigeo (cuando la Luna está en su punto más cercano a la Tierra) lo que hará que nuestro satélite se vea más grande que de costumbre.

Y para responder una pregunta que seguramente se harán algunas personas que leen esto, ¿qué es un eclipse lunar?

La respuesta es bastante sencilla: es cuando la Luna se ubica en la sombra de la Tierra. En este caso es parcial porque la luz del Sol aún alcanza la superficie de nuestro satélite.

Y claro, la pregunta más importante ¿porqué la Luna se ve roja?

La luz del Sol está formada por colores. Los azules y otros más rebotan en la atmósfera de la Tierra, pero otros, como el rojo y el amarillo la atraviesan y alcanzan a reflejarse en la superficie de la Luna. Su tono rojizo hace que parezca que está cubierta de sangre, de ahí su pelicular nombre.

¿Hay algún peligro? Ninguno, los eclipse lunares ocurren por lo menos dos veces al año, pero no siempre coinciden en el mismo lugar, así que olvídese de teorías de que se va a acabar el mundo, que va a ocurrir algo malo, etc. Estos acontecimientos astronómicos tienen millones de años y aquí estamos ¿necesita alguna otra prueba?

¿Es seguro observar el eclipse lunar?

A diferencia de los eclipses solares, que requieren protección ocular para evitar daños en la vista, los eclipses lunares son completamente seguros para ser observados a simple vista. No es necesario utilizar lentes especiales ni otros equipos de protección para disfrutar del evento.

Así que haga un espacio de tiempo y póngase de acuerdo con la familia o amigos para admirar este espectáculo, que repetimos, no anuncia nada, es simplemente una coincidencia del paso de nuestro planeta, el Sol y Luna en el espacio. Además, si tiene pareja, seguramente será algo bastante romántico. Bueno, si el tiempo lo permite y no nos toca un día bastante nublado.

🚨School threat leads to arrest🚨

Last night, at approximately 10:30 PM, Laredo Crime Stoppers received a tip regarding a potential shooting threat at Nixon High School. Crime Stoppers promptly notified the Laredo Police Department, and an investigation was immediately initiated. Laredo Police Investigators worked throughout the night to identify the individual responsible for these alleged threats.

In the early hours of the morning, investigators located the suspect, identified as a 15-year-old juvenile. The juvenile's parents were fully cooperative during the investigation. Officers conducted a thorough search of the residence for any weapons, but none were found. It was also determined that the juvenile was no longer a student at LISD.

The juvenile was arrested and charged with terroristic threats causing fear of serious bodily injury (F/3) and was transported to the Webb County Youth Village. The Laredo Police Department takes these threats seriously and will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

We would like to thank the anonymous tipster who made us aware of this threat and Laredo Crime Stoppers for immediately notifying authorities. The quick actions of this investigation demonstrates the seriousness in which these threats to schools are taken.

L.B. Johnson High School to Hold Day of Remembrance for LCpl David Lee Espinoza
Monday, August 26 at 9:00 AM, at Lyndon B. Johnson High School Library, 5626 Cielito Lindo Blvd

Laredo Texas .- U.S Marine Lance Corporal David Lee Espinoza gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country on August 26th, 2021, when a terrorist detonated a bomb at Hamid Karzai Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, where LCpl Espinoza was posted during the US withdrawal and subsequent evacuations.

As he was an alumnus of Johnson High School, the campus will honor LCpl Espinoza with a brief ceremony in the Library at 9:00 AM. They are inviting everyone to wear purple, and encouraging them to bring a flower to place by his memorial sculpture in the library.
There will also be a Moment of Silence during the morning announcements at 8:20 AM.
