After serving 28 years with the Flint Township Fire Department, Captain Jason McClanahan has decided to call it a career.

McClanahan, who retired from the department on Sept. 3, received an official proclamation from the Flint Township Board of Trustees on Monday and a commemorative plaque presented by Flint Township Fire Chief Brett Beckley. McClanahan’s family was on hand to honor his career, along with many fellow Flint Township firefighters that served with him.

With summer now in the rearview mirror, Flushing is preparing to welcome in fall with its annual Harvest Festival.

Harvest Fest, presented by the Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce, will take over downtown Flushing on Oct. 1 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The festival will feature games, contests, crafts, food and Main Street entertainment, along with music provided by THE SPINS.

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan held its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Sept. 15 with the goal of raising $50,000 to help feed hungry people throughout its 22-county service area. For $30, patrons got to try delicious soups and take home a handmade decorative bowl created by local artisans from the Flint Institute of Arts. The one-of-a-kind bowls serve as a reminder of the ongoing presence of hunger in the community and the food bank’s efforts to provide for those in need. There was also an online auction, cooking demonstrations and local celebrity servers.

Drivers entering Flushing from E. Pierson Road will soon be greeted with an array of banners along the city’s portion of the corridor.

At the Sept. 12 city council meeting, City Manager Michelle King informed council members that Flushing has been chosen to take part in a promotional program by CGI Digital, a company that produced videos for the city’s website. CGI has offered to supply 25 Community Showcase banners that can be mounted on light/wire posts along the E. Pierson Road Corridor to welcome passerby into the city and display advertising.

The 16th annual Bikes on the Bricks motorcycle show and competition roared into Flint from Sept. 9-11, with a highlight of the event being the police-escorted ride on Saturday, Sept. 10. The ride drew a convoy of hundreds of motorcycles of all kinds that went from Miller Road and Austins Parkway in Flint Township, through neighboring communities including Clayton Township, the City of Swartz Creek, the townships of Gaines, Mundy and Grand Blanc, and the City of Burton, ending in downtown Flint.

The Flushing Township Police Department announced Officer Dave Ramirez as its newest full-time officer at the Sept. 8, Flushing Township board meeting. Ramirez, who has worked part-time in Flushing Township since June 2021, will continue his current assignment as a school resource officer at Flushing Middle School and cover patrol shifts during the summertime.

Sgt. Jim Hough, who is serving as interim police chief for Flushing Township, said that his department appreciates Ramirez’s skills and experience.

“Officer Ramirez is an outstanding officer possessing qualities that police officers must have,” he said. “What I respect most about him is his strong moral character and an ability to stay calm in high stress situations.”

Prior to joining Flushing Township police, Ramirez spent 25 years as a patrolman with the Mt. Morris Township Police Department. He retired from Mt. Morris Township this March.

Flushing American Legion Post #283 paid tribute to the lives that were lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, with a ceremony at the Flushing Cemetery on Sunday, Sept. 11. Remarks were given by Lucinda Hahn, a United States Navy veteran and American Legion Post #283 member; Lloyd Lamphere, past Commander of Governor Crapo Camp 145, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War; and Flushing Mayor Joseph Karlichek.

St. Robert Catholic Church to host national speaker

FLUSHING — St. Robert Catholic Church, located on 310 N. Cherry Street, will kick off its 100-year Anniversary activities with nationally known speaker Rebecca Kiessling on Sept. 15. Kiessling, a family law attorney and mother of five, will speak on Catholic social teachings and topics starting at 7 p.m. and host a Q&A session at 8 p.m. The event will start with praise and worship at 6:30 p.m. There will also be food and fellowship.

Automobile lovers in search of a relaxed weekend car show featuring the “oldies” can check out the 28th Annual Golden Memories Car Show.

Golden Memories, a vintage automobile gathering sponsored by Friends of Sloan Museum & Longway Planetarium, will be held at the Flint Cultural Center on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The show is free for both car owners and eventgoers, with vehicle registration open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Golden Memories is exclusively for original or authentically restored vehicles produced in 1972 or earlier (no visible modifications are allowed).

Flushing American Legion Post #283 will conduct at 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the Flushing Cemetery on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. The ceremony will honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and pay special tribute to Flushing native Todd Beamer, who is credited with leading a group of passengers who fought and prevented the terrorists who hijacked Flight 93 from reaching the target of the Capital Building or the White House. All onboard were killed when the flight crashed in Pennsylvania. Beamer’s last words to the group, “Let’s Roll,” are engraved on a monument in Flushing Cemetery donated by the Sons of the American Revolution.

The public is invited to attend and participate. Please bring a chair or two, as seating will not be provided for the ceremony, which will be held in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument near the Chamberlain Street entrance. There will also be musical tributes and remarks from Flushing Mayor Joseph Karlichek.

Lifelong Detroit Tigers fan Joe Lussier is well-known around the Flushing Area Senior Center (FASC) for his volunteering spirit and his love for baseball.

To honor Lussier, the senior center helped to arrange two special meetings for him with Mike Ilitch, a grandson of late Detroit Tigers owner and Little Caesars founder Mike Ilitch Sr. Lussier also received a baseball autographed by Detroit Tigers star first baseman Miguel Cabrera.

Flushing Township narrows search for new police chief

Flushing Township is in the process of selecting a new police chief following the retirement of Chief Mark Bolin, who announced his retirement earlier this summer and finished his last day on the job on Aug. 31. So far, the township has received 10 applicants for its open police chief position. Oral interviews will be scheduled for candidates this week and next week.

In the meantime, the township has appointed Sgt. Jim Hough as interim police chief until a permanent replacement is named for Bolin, who served as chief for three years and was with the department for 25 years.

Kearsley High School senior Katelyn Jacot had the honors of hitting a ceremonial first tee shot to kick off The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren last Friday. Jacot represented the First Tee of Eastern Michigan, a youth development organization that empowers young golfers through leadership programs and golf outings.

Former U.S. Ryder Cup team captain and 12-time PGA Tour event winner Steve Stricker has become the latest champion at The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren.

Stricker, making his Ally Challenge debut, emerged from a crowded field of competitors to capture the fifth edition of the tournament on Sunday at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club. Stricker carded a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to finish 15-under-par, one stroke clear of Brett Quigley and two strokes ahead of Jeff Maggert.
