WLNS Jim Geyer

WLNS Jim Geyer Meteorologist, SKYWARN Spotter, Coaster Correspondent, Sports Fan, Scuba Diver. I’m back at WLNS after working for four years in the Flint/Saginaw TV market.
(21)

I was here previously from 1990 to 2004 and was part of the first news team to start a morning newscast on WLNS. I have over 30 years of experience forecasting weather in Michigan. I started in radio, providing weathercasts during the night for WJR-AM in Detroit for 13 years. The remainder of my work has been primarily in television. I am a licensed Ham Radio operator and will occasionally storm-c

hase and report severe weather as a SKYWARN Spotter. I’ve been married to my wife Jane for over 25 years. We love to travel and are both certified scuba divers. Some of our travels have taken us to the Aruba, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Saba, St. Lucia, The Bahamas, Mexico, Hawaii and Tahiti, just to name a few places. We are also avid roller coaster enthusiasts and always make it a point to visit Cedar Point at least once a year. We have a dog, Stormy, who is our third cocker spaniel that we’ve adopted. We are also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity.

If you're going to Frankenmuth this weekend, a couple of large snow sculptures are being done by two groups anyway, along with the others which a little smaller, and there are more ice sculptures in the area than normal.

Zehnder's Snowfest in Frankenmuth starts today with "All Things Chocolate" and with three different - brownies, cakes, and cookies. I'll be judging all three today; nothing new with me. Wish me luck.

Summer is wrapping up, and that means so is Geyer's Garden! But, for just the last few weeks, we're going to try something a little different.

We want to see YOUR beautiful garden! So if you want to show off your hard work before the summer ends (just two more weeks), comment below, and you just might be on TV 📺🖥🎥

By the way, it doesn't have to be a vegetable garden. A flower garden is fine, too. 🌹🥀🌺🌻🌼

I'm quite a bit behind showing the roller coaster vacation early this month. So, here I go with amusement park number 4. After leaving Holiday World on Monday, we went Tuesday to Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay in Louisville. As is always the case, Jane and I went right to the roller coasters. My favorite one is Storm Chaser and it was the first coaster in America to feature a barrel roll drop from a 10-story lift hill. Kentucky Flyer is a non-stop, up-and-down 12 airtime fun. Thunder Run is smoother now since our last time there, thanks to a refurbishment costing nearly 1 million dollars. Other rides are Lightning Run with a 100-foot, 80-degree drop and T3, a suspended looping coaster. Last year, Kentucky Kingdom was sold to Herschend Family Entertainment, the owner of Silver Dollar City in Missouri and Dollywood in Tennessee. It will be interesting to see how it will change with more money.

My third roller coaster quest is in southern Indiana. Holiday World & Splashin' Safari is near the town of Santa Claus, IN. Here's something that's unbelievable: the parking is free, soft drinks are free, sunscreen and hand sanitizers are free to use, and WiFi is free. And here is one called Worry-Free Weather Guarantee. If the rides are down for a "total" of 90 minutes, you can redeem the current ticket for another day. Guess who gets another day of fun? 🤔
Before a downpour moved in, my wife and I were able to ride all the great roller coasters: The Legend, The Raven, The Voyage and Thunderbird, all of which at one time were in the top 10 roller coasters. If you ever get to southern Indiana, I would heartily recommend going to Holiday World.

My second roller coaster quest was Saturday to Kennywood, outside of Pittsburgh. The most recently coaster was the Steel Curtain - 4000 feet long, lots of twists and turns, 76 mph, on 2 minutes long. At the other end, the Jack Rabbit wooden roller coaster has been at the park since 1920 and is still a legacy to this day.

This is the 150th anniversary of Cedar Point so my wife and I came here for Coastermania. Partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the 70s - perfect weather for riding roller coasters.🎢🎡🎠🌤

I'm just about finished completing the garden. The cool and wet Spring held me back. The only thing left to put under the dirt are purple potatoes 🥔. I was told they taste like, well, like potatoes. Somewhere, while working in the garden, I cut my arm. It wasn't much but a little soap and water and I was back to work. I can't wait to get the zucchini growing.

The first flowers of the year are up today. I'm sure they'll be more soon. The hyacinth is probably hoping for warmer weather before opening up the florets.

Monday was the third day of my (and wife's) CoasterQuest and stopped in at Knoebels, almost in the middle of Pennsylvania. And, we just walked in. REALLY. Knoebels takes you back to the old days. There is no admission to go in and no pay to park. I parked the car, walked right in, and headed for a booth to get ticket books (you can also pay for an all day pass). The major roller coasters were $3.50 per ride. The ones we liked the best were Twister, Phoenix (two wooden coasters) and the steel ride Impulse. They also have a lot of kiddie rides and family rides.

Second day of Coaster fun. Today I was at Dorney Park in Allentown in Eastern PA. It was a hot day, just like mid-Michigan, so I rode as many times on their roller coasters as I could, and between a lot of visits to a water fountain. I shot this view of the park from the gondola on their ferris wheel. 🎡 Tomorrow I'm going to visit a family owned amusement park. Please clouds, don't rain. 🙏🎢

I was not working at WLNS-TV Friday because I was at Cedar Point for their annual Coastermania. From 7:30am to 10:30pm I was riding roller coasters with my wife, taking time for lunch (provided by Cedar Point) and a meal at the in-park Frontier Festival, which is only there until June 13. The weather was perfect; dry and not too hot. I'll be visiting more parks for a few more days. After all, it's what a Coaster Correspondent does.

I finally finished Geyer's Garden today. Beets planted in the raised bed. Three rows of potatoes that were planted a few weeks ago. A row along the back fence for sugar peas to climb up on. Green beans along another fence. Three roma tomatoes along another fence. In the middle are three mounds - one for acorn squash, one for butternut squash, and one for zucchini. The blackberries and black raspberries outside the fencing are about ready to flower. My dog Hershey is watching from a distance. The fun is just beginning.
Feel free to show me your garden. I may just stop by and take a look.
