For anyone that wondered how we got about, and where we stayed whilst in Florida 🌞
There are so many ways of doing Florida and we have done most of them, but for this trip, we flew to Orlando International Airport (we will do a separate review of this).
We then used Sixt to hire a car, as they always have the best service, and a generally better choice of cars, and we have never have to wait in a queue - following a 2 hour wait at a rival company in New York and some other bad rental experiences, we pretty much always try and use Sixt now!
We opted for a standard SUV which was a GMC Acadia, which was a similar size to an audi Q7, but the next morning we discovered the turn signal light was showing a warning light, we contacted them via the app and was told to bring it back whenever/whereever, to get it swapped out. This wasn't a probalem for us as on that day we didnt have anything planned specifically other than shopping, so nipped back to the airport and got upgraded to a Ford Expedition for the inconvenience.
The Expedition is huge (we also rented one from New York) and a pleasure to drive - I will miss it, but i wont miss the 13 mpg 😂 but at $2.70 per gallon of fuel, it is all relative!
We had a Visitor Toll Pass which we picked up from the airport - these are available from a vending machine. Most tolls are now cashless so having a toll pass will save you both time and money. I really love driving in the USA - it is so simple (apart from the 1 day where I missed my turning 3 times and a 20 min trip took nearly an hour 😂🤦)
In terms of where we spent most of our time, we stayed at a beautiful 3 bedroom villa, located in Buenaventura Lakes booked via Clickstay. This area essentially the opposite side of the 192 that we are used to staying at, near the airport. We normally stay in the Davenport area and is a bit of pain for traffic and getting to I4/International Drive area, but here was brilliant - being so close to everything made it a real joy and it had everything you could need shops/eateries-wise, right on it's doorstep. The pool at this house was also awesome - we paid for it to be heated and it looked out onto a small lake with lots of wildlife!
We did stay in resort hotels for a few nights but I will post separately about these.
We always much prefer having a car, and our own place as it makes it easier for us - but there really is so many different ways to do Florida, and each have their own merits.
What is your go to place to stay or way to get around when in florida?
