Great Lakes Courier

Great Lakes Courier This is the page for The Great Lakes Courier--a biker owned and managed news outlet dedicat Citizen journalism is the ideal vehicle for this.

The Great Lakes Courier is a print and online forum dedicated to helping bicyclists spread the word about their projects, accomplishments, events, and issues. Our intent is to amplify bicycle culture, rather than inadvertently put it in the little boxes typically reserved for us in main stream media. Instead of allowing discussion of bikes to be limited to the bikes versus cars debate that typical

ly follows tragic accidents or plans for bike lanes, we aim to dig into bike culture--the people, the rides, the accomplishments, joys, and freedoms bicyclists enjoy in Cleveland. The Great Lakes Courier is a big umbrella with room for all kinds of cyclists--the commuters, the road racers, the mountain bikers, the tourists, the BMX riders, the track racers, the kids in the neighborhood, and the folks just doing their thing around town on a sunny day. We want to be inclusive, to show how large and diverse the cycling community is. It’s a big-umbrella concept: Whatever you, your club, your company, or your organization has to say about bicycles and the bicycle community, we have room for that. We want your stories about rides. We want your stories about neighborhoods as seen through a cyclist’s eyes. We want to hear about your accomplishments, whether they be commuting to work every day, or cycling through winter, or winning competitions, or losing weight. We want your stories about local issues that affect the cycling community: The bike lane proposals, the new trail proposals, the visions of bike stations, the reports on how many people are commuting these days. We want your race results. We want news of Critical Mass and your club rides. We want it all.

We hate losing anyone... God speed Robert.

We were devastated to learn of the passing of our friend Robert Bobik, a constant presence of positivity in Cleveland's (and the Greater Cleveland Area's) bike scene, and also an occasional member of SQUAD.

To say Bob was "enthusiastic about bikes" is both an understatement and an oversell; bikes were just a machine to get Robert Bobik where he wanted to be, and a means to enable his thirst for adventure and friendship. From Slow Roll to Cleveland Critical Mass to Akron Bike Party and to the trails -- whether they be indoor at Ray's MTB or out in the great wilds of the state -- Bob would ride it.

We'll miss him.

Beat Cycles Opens In Lakewood!

By now you probably know that Great Lakes Courier will not publish this year.

As we start a new season of what we hope will eventually turn out to be warm weather, I want to take the opportunity to thank all of you who made it possible for the paper to publish stories and advocacy for Northeast Ohio Cycling.

I'd especially like to thank Bike Cleveland, Spin Bikes, Fairview Cycle, Joy Machines, Pyro Apparel, Rising Star Coffee, Root Cafe, and our other advertisers for helping to provide the forum. All of you helped provide a place for bike culture to grow. The vast majority of the writing that appeared in Great Lakes Courier was done specifically for the paper, and wouldn't have existed without your support.

I'd also make special mention of Jacob VanSickle, the extraordinarily prolific cyclist and writer Shelli Snyder, Michael Mullins, Francisco Molina, and others who made it a point month after month to report on their adventures and their news. Thanks also to occasional contributors like Diane Lees, John McGovern, Krissie Wells, Jane Blackie, and others I know I'm forgetting. There were many other writers who contributed significantly to the paper, but I wanted to make special mention of those.

Finally, thanks to my collaborators, Erika Durham and Jim O'Bryan, who each in their way made Great Lakes Courier happen.
I look forward to seeing you all riding around town.

“How do you want to celebrate your birthday?” my friend Katie asked.

“Let’s take a bike ride, a long one,” I answered.

And just like that, we were planning my first century ride.

On October 1st The National Bike Challenge came to a close. For Cleveland this marked the end of a five months battle. A battle that was fueled by a deep desire to win, a passion for being better than our rival and a love for riding bikes. The battle was the Rust Belt Battle of the Bikes, pitting Cl...

In this third chapter of Michael Mullins' Lake Erie Odyssey, Mike is still in Canada, pedaling around the northeast side of the Lake, headed toward Niagara Falls.

Setting off from Wheatley Provincial Park following the previous night’s exorbitantly priced and raccoon disturbed sleep, I decided to alter my plans and push 20km past another provincial park to reach the Clearville Park campground.
