Grizzly 399, a beloved mama bear known as the “Queen of Wyoming” in Grand Teton National Park, has died after being hit by a car. Over the past 23 years, 399 had eight litters − 18 known cubs in total. At 28 years old, she was the oldest known reproducing female grizzly bear in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. She was a marvel! I feel lucky to have photographed and watched 399 on several of my many trips to the Tetons. 399 and her cubs has been one of my favorite subjects to paint, and have been in many of my paintings. This piece I did several years ago, and if you look closely, her infamous tag number is carved in the Aspen. -

I was recently interview by Southwest Art Magazine- One of the works we received is “Icons of the West” depicting the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. What was the inspiration behind the work?

“Icons of the West,” depicting the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, was inspired by my love for Western culture and the iconic imagery associated with it. The bar, with its rich history and distinctive Western flair, captures the rugged spirit and charm of the American West. Even though you can’t actually see the Tetons behind the bar, I enjoy “moving mountains”! The original version of this concept is part of the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar’s permanent collection in Jackson Hole, and it’s become a popular spot for selfies.
