Minute Clinic - Planning the Improvisation Program

"It's back to school and you have spent the summer selecting repertoire for the Jazz Ensemble. Now is the time to plan for developing students' improvisational skills on those charts. Don’t wait until only a few weeks until the festival! Utilize the many published resources to guide students in their development and call on area professionals who are more than willing to work with the students. Talk with established jazz educators in your area. Learn how they work with their students and what tools, materials and clinicians work best for them. Teaching students how to improvise is a long term project! It's important to get started early and focus on the repertoire at hand." - Terry White, Composer/Educator, in SBO+ Magazine's "Minute Clinic" September issue!

Tonight (Thursday) at 7PM LIVESTREAM- The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Library will host a program about the life of Art Dedrick, the jazz musician and music educator who co-founded Kendor Music in Delevan in 1954. “Art Dedrick: Cattaraugus County’s Pioneer in Jazz Education,” will be given by Art Dedrick’s children, Jason and Sandra.

The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Library will host a bonus Summer at the Stone House program at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18. The topic will be the life of Art Dedrick, the jazz musician and music educator who co-founded Kendor Music in Delevan in 1954.

The presentation, titled “Art Dedrick: Cattaraugus County’s Pioneer in Jazz Education,” will be given by Art Dedrick’s children, Jason and Sandra.

Jason Dedrick is professor emeritus at Syracuse University, where he taught in the School of Information Studies. He was raised in Delevan and holds degrees from SUNY Brockport, UC San Diego and UC Irvine, where he was a research associate and adjunct professor for many years. His publications include the books Asia’s Computer Challenge (Oxford University Press) and Global E-Commerce (Cambridge University Press), and over 100 academic journal articles and conference papers. His most recent book is Art Dedrick: Pioneer in Music Education.

Sandra Dedrick is a singer-songwriter and original member of the sibling group The Free Design. Their first album, Kites Are Fun, was released in 1967. The title track reached #3 on WKBW’s Top 30 in Buffalo and made Billboard’s top 40 in Adult Contemporary music. The group appeared on TV shows such as The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Merv Griffin Show and The Mike Douglas Show. Sandra’s song, “Love You” has appeared on several commercials, in the movie Stranger than Fiction, and the Showtime series Weeds. Sandra was raised in Delevan. She studied music at SUNY Fredonia, and taught music in Buffalo, Long Island and Ontario.

Art Dedrick was a jazz trombonist, composer, arranger, teacher and pioneer in music education. He was the first to publish professional-sounding big band charts that were playable by students at all skill levels. Jason Dedrick's book documents his remarkable life overcoming daunting challenges to become a trail blazer in the jazz education movement. It includes interviews with musical colleagues, educators, students, family and friends, as well as photos, news articles and personal correspondence.

Dedrick was raised on a farm in Delevan, New York without electricity, central heating or running water. As a high school trombonist, he finished first in a statewide solo competition and second in a national competition at the 1932 Chicago World’s Fair. After college, he played and arranged for major bands in the swing era, including Red Norvo and Vaughn Monroe.

Dedrick was stricken with polio in 1944 and had to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. When he returned to his hometown to teach music, he realized that there was an absence of good jazz music scores that could be played by his students. To address this need, he and two other music teachers founded Kendor Music in 1954. Kendor published hundreds of his compositions and arrangements and those of legends such as Count Basie, Thad Jones, Phil Woods, Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Sammy Nestico. He continued to teach and inspire young musicians and promote jazz education at conferences, clinics and music camps around the U.S.

Dedrick became one of the most influential and dedicated proponents of the school jazz ensemble movements in America and published over 300 "big band" pieces.

Since 1954, Kendor Music has been on the forefront of publishing educational editions for jazz ensemble, string orchestra, instrumental solo and ensembles, and text/method books.

All “Summer at the Stone House” events begin at 7 p.m. and are held under an event tent on the museum’s lawn, rain or shine. Some seating will be available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs if they wish. This event is free and open to the public.

All “Summer at the Stone House” programs will be livestreamed on our YouTube channel for those who are unable to attend in person.
