As it goes in most farming families, sons and daughters who want to step into the family vocation step into their parents’ and even grandparents’ operation. But two young men in East Carroll Parish were recently recognized by Farm Journal for taking a different route.

At the annual meeting of the Louisiana Press Association in Baton Rouge today, our paper brought home four first place prizes for our work last year, including first in General Excellence, and two third place. Billy Coleman received the Sam Hanna Award for best regular column. We are so proud of him, know what this would have meant to him, and would give a lot to have seen him accept it himself. Thanks for reading us and supporting us. Onward!

Grades for East Carroll’s four water systems were released recently and all but the Lake Providence Water System received passing grades for 2023. Monticello’s water system received an A grade, while the East Carroll North and East Carroll South systems each received a C grade.

Lake Providence Levee Festival was a third year success, a gathering and celebration of all things East Carroll, put on by local nonprofit Doorway to Louisiana.

Tucked into the base of the levee where Lake Street dead ends, more than 500 people – from Little Rock, California, Shreveport, New Orleans and right here in East Carroll parish – came out to enjoy and celebrate the life and vibrancy of our downtown.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved reporter Billy Coleman. Our latest issue, the first issue of this newspaper printed without his input in twenty years, was filled with holes where his words would have been. He's left a hole in this community, in this office, and in our hearts. Thank you for reading Billy's words over the years, for all of your kind thoughts over the last ten days, and for your continued thoughts and prayers for his family.

Funeral services for Billy Joe Coleman, age 50, of Lake Providence, Louisiana will be held at 11 am on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at St. Mary’s Church in Lake Providence.

We look forward to visiting the renovated and repaired Cotton Museum before too long!

Straight-line winds that blew through East Carroll last June did damage to the Louisiana State Cotton Museum, and the state is taking bids through May 7 to do the repairs, according to Thomas Carmody, director of state museums under Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry.
