2024 SQF LIGHTNING: Evening Update (7-24-2024)

– 22,105 acres | 10% containment
– 9,204 acres | 25% containment
- 941 acres | 0% containment
Total Personnel: 1,095

Just before 1:00 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to reports of a vegetation in the Kern River Canyon. Firefighters located the fire, which was burning in brush on both sides of State Route 178, just east of Democrat Springs. The fire spread up the steep canyon walls quickly as an aggressive initial attack was made during the extreme afternoon heat. Borel was the name assigned to the incident. At the time of the SQF Lightning incident taking over its management, the fire was 941 acres in size and continuing to grow at a moderate rate. Due to the fire, the Kern County Fire Department has issued an evacuation warning for zone KRN-403-A.

On the Trout Fire cloud cover, precipitation, and higher relative humidity helped to lessen fire intensity today. Firefighters continued to strengthen the containment line along Sherman Pass Rd while also building control line from that same road southward along Mosquito Meadow Rd. On the south and east sides of the fire, the work to shuttle in resources needed to build control line continues.

Today, fire behavior on the Long Fire was moderate, due to the work completed by fire crews over the last several days and more favorable weather conditions. There was no perimeter growth reported and containment is now at 25%.
