Tom Giovannoni was born and raised in Lake Como, WI. After High School he joined the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman at Fort Hood, TX and in Seoul Korea. After serving his first 3 years he came home to start a career in Law Enforcement. He reunited with an old flame from High School and soon thereafter started planning for a life together. Unfortunately, the timing for starting his career in Walworth County was not in the cards. Tom reinstated his active-duty status with U.S. Army and began working with the Traffic Section of the Military Police unit at Fort Campbell, KY. Soon after he tied the knot with his old flame and will be celebrating 37 years in just a few days.
In the last year of his 3-year commitment, Tom started his family with the birth of his son Zachary. After making the tough decision to leave the Army, Tom, his wife and son moved back to Lake Geneva and shortly thereafter bought their first home in Elkhorn. Tom’s small family was joined by another son, Dylan, who continues to be the kid who does not bring home animals to rescue, but other humans. Several years after Zachary and Dylan were well into their 20’s, Tom and his wife adopted Dylan’s good friend Jeremy (who was 26 at the time). The boys have brought 3 grandsons and a granddaughter into the steadily growing family. Tom began his new duty as husband and father working at Wanasek Excavating.
If you ever drive through Janesville or many other areas in the Walworth/Rock County area, you are sure to hear Tom state that “he ran power to that area.” Tom continued to endeavor to continue his career in law enforcement and worked part time at several departments while waiting for a full-time position to become available. Tom served on the City of Elkhorn Fire Department and also on the City of Elkhorn Police Department. A full-time position finally became available at the Town of Geneva, where he served for many years. In 1995 he applied and was hired at the City of Lake Geneva as a part time officer. In 2001 he was hired to a full time position where he served as a patrol officer, trainer, SWAT team member as a sniper. Tom retired from law enforcement in 2017 after over 30 years of service, and presently can be heard on 96.1 WLKG as the co-host on Life Matters which airs on Sunday mornings at 8:00am.
As an advocate for law enforcement, Tom was offered the opportunity to assist in the training of many of the officers in the Walworth, Racine and Kenosha County area. He holds several certificates with the State of Wisconsin including Fi****ms Instructor, Defense and arrest tactics instructor, Emergency vehicle operator instructor, a master instructor in vehicle contacts, and Crisis management instructor just mention a few. He also has served as an adjunct instructor at the Gateway Technical College Police Academy and at Blackhawk Technical College. He continues his 26 Year teaching career having a great impact on shaping the future officers in Southeastern Wisconsin.
In Tom’s spare time he enjoys time on his Motorcycles (a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic and a custom Chopper that he designed with his friends at Rock County Cycles, tinkering on any number of automobile projects, working in the woods on his property, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his 3 grandsons (and looking forward to the days when his granddaughter moves back to the area to join in the mix). Tom has rode his motorcycle in 49 of 50 states with only Alaska left to ride in.
Over the past 30 years, Tom has been involved in a Drag Racing Program called “Beat the Heat”. He started the program while stationed at Fort Campbell KY and continued it for another 28 years at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI. He and his racecar were regulars at many fundraising and charity events. It was not unusual to see him almost every weekend during the summer at an event to raise awareness. A few years ago, a tragic event occurred in one of his grandson’s life. The family turned to the Tree House for that support and his grandson’s emotional recovery has been amazing. Not only for the personal effect that the Tree House has had on Tom, but the overall community effect has been inspiring. Tom is excited to name the Tree House as his benefactor for the Mr. Lake Geneva Pageant and is looking forward to creative ways to help raise not only money to support them, but also community awareness that help is available.
