December 8, 1980 – On This Day in Rock History, John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman, outside his home at the Dakota Apartment building on the northwestern corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York. After approaching the former Beatle and calling his name, Chapman dropped into a combat stance and shot John in his chest, back, and left arm. Lennon staggered into the porters' vestibule in a desperate attempt to get upstairs to see his son, Sean. As he collapsed, John was comforted by porter Jay Hastings, who covered him with his jacket and gently removed his glasses. Police were quickly summoned and took John to Roosevelt Hospital on West Fifty-ninth St. Although doctors did everything they could to save him, John Lennon was pronounced dead at 11:07 PM. A sobbing Yoko cried "Oh no, no, no, no... tell me it's not true," and was led away in shock. After the shooting, the 24-year-old Chapman remained at the scene, took out his copy of ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ and read it until the police arrived. He was arrested without incident. Much of America learned of the tragedy from ABC-TV, which was in the midst of airing an NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots on ‘Monday Night Football.’ Announcer Howard Cosell, who had interviewed Lennon years earlier, announced the news of the murder: "This, we have to say it, is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City. John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the West Side of New York City, the most famous perhaps of all of The Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival." When asked why he decided to target Lennon, Chapman said he couldn't resist the fame that would come with the crime. "That bright light of fame, of infamy, notoriety was there," he said. "I couldn't resist it."

December 7, 1991 – On This Day in Rock History, "Black or White" by Michael Jackson hits No. 1 in America for the first of seven weeks. Out of the nine singles from ‘Dangerous,’ "Black or White" is the only one to reach No. 1. The anthem of racial harmony, co-written by future Sheryl Crow collaborator Bill Bottrell, entered the chart at No. 35 and leapfrogged to the top by its third week – the fastest jump in 22 years since The Beatles' rise with "Get Back." It also marks Jackson's 12th chart-topper as a solo artist, placing him third behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley for most No. 1's on the Hot 100.

December 7, 1973 – On This Day in Rock History, Todd Rundgren performs his hit "Hello It's Me" on ‘The Midnight Special’ wearing a bizarre, bird-like outfit. Rundgren wrote the song in 1968, and by the time it became a hit, he had moved on to a psychedelic/art rock phase, which explains the incongruent wardrobe selection.

On this week’s edition of the School of Rock we explore some of the most infamous copyright infringement cases in pop music history. From lyrical lifts and unlicensed sampling to melodies that sound just a tad too similar, there are many points of contention. It’s only natural that song writers mimic what’s been successful in the past but there’s a blurred line between inspiration and theft. Catch our “Borrowed Tunes Show” on Saturday afternoon at 2, with re-broadcasts on Sunday night at 6 and Tuesday night at 10 only on McNeese Radio, KBYS 88.3, and streaming at kbys.fm.

December 6, 1969 – On This Day in Rock History, a group called Steam was given credit for this week's Billboard chart-topping tune, "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye". The song was actually recorded by vocalist Gary De Carlo along with producers Paul Leka and Dale Frashuer, who laid down the entire tune with only keyboards and a pre-recorded drum track, using no guitars or bass. The trio of friends intended it to be the "B" side of De Carlo's first single, "Sweet Laura Lee,” but when record company executives heard the songs, they wanted to release both of them separately as an "A" side and hire a band to tour as Steam. De Carlo was even offered the chance to record an entire album, but the group, whose picture would appear on the LP, would take full credit for the effort even though they wouldn't sing or play a single note on it. De Carlo wanted nothing to do with the scheme and walked away from a record that went on to sell over six and a half million copies. The song takes the top spot from The Beatles, who reigned with "Come Together," and spent two weeks at No. 1. After it fades from the charts, the song is rarely heard on the radio, but often sung at sporting events and other occasions when a mocking goodbye is in order.
