In my studio …

… I feel like I am stepping into a river — everything just flows. Here, I feel heard and seen. It’s a place where I can express myself more freely than with words, allowing me to be my most authentic self. This space is both powerful and vulnerable, a sanctuary where the unseen becomes visible and where I create my own reality. In my creative flow, ideas become tangible and dreams take flight. I arrange flowers around my easel, picked up earlier from the market, transforming the beauty of the natural world into the color and texture on my canvases. My creative space and the time spent behind my brushes ground me. It feels like I’m truly living in the center of my destiny, doing what I’m meant to do. — Esther Franchuk

"My studio is very colorful, with cream walls that are covered in art or color charts. I'm one of those very messy artists, so every surface is covered with stuff and stacks. There's usually hardly any floor space to even walk or get into the studio! The floor is always covered with paintings, cut pieces of paper, paint tubes, and all kinds of artsy things. I basically use the floor like a large table. I'm also very OK with being that kind of artist — I'm just not neat and tidy! Once in a while, I have to clean up, and I always regret it because I can’t find anything after I organize." — Sandi Hester

It's the Little Things by Sharra Frank

As a mosaic artist, I have a wide variety of materials that can be easily lost or misplaced, so I organize them by collections and color. There are groupings of apothecary jars storing colorful tiles, glass, and beads. Smaller jars hold collections of rhinestones, vintage findings, beads, shells, and more. Sprinkled amongst the shelves are cherished objects and collections awaiting the right project: jars of faceted French vintage rhinestones, vintage Chanel findings, tassels, finials, enameled metal flowers and leaves, metal filigree, pearls, handmade tiles, Italian mirror glass in various hues, and a rainbow of Italian glass smalti.

Heart of Crafts by Iris Heller

Let me open a door for you... a door into my world of soul relaxation through creativity and flow. There is nothing I like more than sharing my passion and my studio. Through my illustrated life, I wish to let you into a world of tenderness, attention to detail, and the joy of the beauty of all that surrounds us. My studio, the craft of the heart, is an opportunity to seek and enjoy simplicity, inspiration, and creativity.

"My studio is the most important, beautiful, admired, and loved part of my home - stepping into it feels like entering a sacred creative wonderland where time moves at a different pace, inspiration is never-ending, and anything is possible. My studio is a place for growth - both personal, creative, and botanical. As my plant collection in the studio grows, so does the number of plants and natural elements in my paintings. And every day, as my plants bring me harmony, peace, and grounding, I do my best to encapsulate the same feelings in my paintings.

My studio has evolved slowly with intention and meaning. Every object here is a treasure – either thrifted, found on the street, handmade, or gifted. It has created a deeply personal and comfortable space that fills my cup every day." — Julie Celina

Chloe McEldowney's Favorite Room

"Just like my paintings, my studio is where my roles as artist and mother converge. Never clean, you can find my son's art supplies and toy turtles strewn across the floor. His tiny easel (made from my old painting easel) sits in the corner of the room. Some days, this space functions as my sanctuary to paint alone. On other days, it's where my son and I make weird creations and have impromptu dance parties." — Chloe McEldowney

Where Magic Takes Shape by Maggie Macdonald

My studio is a wonderful shoebox in its shape with exposed wooden beams. The wooden floors and walls are white, the kind that was once crisp but now shows the wear and tear of all the time spent shuffling about and spilling paint with abandon. The space is “clean adjacent” but rarely ever put together enough to call it properly clean. It is also filled with plants, lots of plants. The atmosphere of my studio is safe — a space where “things can spill,” whether ink, wine, emotions, or whatever. As creative people know, your process can be an intimate experience — this studio is the unbiased witness and generous participant that helps make everything possible.

"Fresh flowers are a constant fixture in my studio, providing inspiration and ideas for my Impressionistic floral paintings. I find joy in being greeted each day by colorful bouquets and art supplies – a dream come true since I was a little girl. Back then, my mother often would leave little hand-picked bouquets in bud vases in my bedroom for me to come home to. Now, my husband picks out and buys the flowers for my studio. The language of flowers means "love" to me and always has.

I often stage my paintings on my studio's walls, easels, and floor as I study them and plan my next series. There is a constant ebb and flow of creativity and ideas laced with gratitude and awe for the beauty of this world and each season. This joyful gratitude is what spills out onto my canvas when I paint. And when rest is needed, I find myself a tranquil spot in my garden to sit and unwind." — Kathleen Rietz

"I live on an island off the south coast of England, on a road of Victorian houses with large rooms and high ceilings. At the end of our road is a castle that stands on a hill surrounded by ancient woodland. My studio is in the middle of downstairs with three doors that connect it to the rest of the house.

I leave all the doors open so I can hear the sounds of the garden through the large glass patio doors that also let in plenty of light. One of the other doors is connected to the hallway and I like that people see what I’ve got on my easel as they walk past. They’ll offer another perspective, encouragement, or a sympathetic ear when it’s tough going. They ask if I’d like a coffee, and chat about their day. When the kids were tiny they made things in here too and we’d work together. I like to think that seeing what happens in this studio helps them understand the journey of a creative life and how it changes and evolves." — Sara Netherway

I Was Never an Artist, Until I Was by Emily Bourassa

In those early days, it all felt like a risk. I wanted so badly to know where I was headed and to have an intuitive artistic process. Most of all, I wanted to shake the feeling of uncertainty, but that goal was still years away. As uncomfortable as I was, trusting that it would start to make sense at some point, and remembering I could simply change the things that weren’t working, was what I needed to allow my space to emerge organically.

✨ Reader Spotlight ✨

Kenna Giuzio started her company, Kenna’s Cakes, during COVID after taking a sabbatical from an architectural career and deciding to finally start her own company, but this time with vintage, French, and fashion-inspired sugar floral design and cake as the medium.

“Kenna’s Cakes actually started with my doodled sketch (which became my logo) and a French pastry course I took in North Beach when I was living in a small San Francisco studio apartment 20 years ago, but for years, it was always on the side for fun.

I wanted to make custom art in an art studio that I could open to friends as a “shop” through “late-night cake club,” tasting parties, etc. I wanted to create a whole experience and make it something unique. I then designed, sourced, and managed the build-out of my dream creative space in our garage – a hidden, speakeasy-like art studio kitchen, and I never looked back.” — Kenna Giuzio

In my studio …

… a window looks out toward the east, where every morning the sun lights up the ideas floating around the room. The corners are occupied by collections of objects from the past that energize the atmosphere with sweet nostalgia. My favorite blue in unforgiving acrylics has spread itself on the wall through a mural, on the canvas, has made its way onto the carpet, and has pretty much taken over my flowing ideas, filling them with inspiration. After all, that’s what the studio is for — creating a passageway for inspiration to bring thoughts from the realm of ideas to reality. My work contains unique layers of secrets, symbols, and hidden verses, each stroke full of meaning. Every painting has a story to tell. I choose the elements, from colors to perspective, so the treasures of the hidden messages will be revealed. — Kat Olimpiyuk

Where the Copper Dust Flies by Dawna Gillespie

Reverence to craftsmanship — these words embody everything that my eclectic, sacred, no-rules cobalt studio encompasses. From the well-made vintage furniture and decor to the never-reproduced copper and brass adornments I hand-fabricate, and every element in between, attention to detail and how items are put together is significant to who I am as a metalsmith and jewelry designer. When starting out, I struggled with finding my own voice as a designer and metalsmith, but I realized I couldn’t care less about being trendy or in-style: I wanted to create from a place of authenticity — my soul.

"Our home is nestled in the leafy suburban hills of a small town just north of Sydney, on the southeastern coast of Australia. We are near the sea and enjoy the warm, temperate air and rains that fall regularly here along the coast. My family of four lives in an old weatherboard cottage — a single-story home that is charming and cozy, with a beautiful backyard situated on the eastern side of the house.

The aspect is wonderful for growing flowers. The morning sun rises up over the garden beds — filled with rows that run north to south along the slightly sloping property — and then it moves west over the house, creating shade around the back patio, where I keep my seedling trays and flowerpots." — Elizabeth Walton

Lize's Small Piece of Paradise

"It's just a small nook in our apartment, but I really treasure it. And as you can see, I went all out with the decor. It took me about 5 years to get it like this, and it's still evolving. I love combining old and new pieces, and I always try to make some space on the wall for art from other artists and to display my craft supplies. All the organizing, sorting, and reshuffling is truly a hobby in itself. And I love it!" — Liz Creates
