Summer is the best time for neurodiverse and dyslexic kids to regain self-esteem. They can relax without the daily school stress. Fun activities and hobbies help them discover strengths and build confidence. The relaxed atmosphere and time with loved ones can boost their positive mindset. In short, summer offers a perfect chance for neurodiverse and dyslexic kids to focus on themselves, feel proud of who they are, and build self-esteem.

This illustration is made by Mads Johan Øgaard for Hacking the Code where Grandpa explains to Kees why he felt super good during summer but as the school year progresses his self esteem and confidence fades away and makes room for aches and anxiety.

Planning a garage sale? Maybe clean out the clutter, earn a few dollars for some summer fun? A great idea Tom had was to add a 'Don't nix it, FIX IT' option to jhis garage sale. Several neighbors made use of his service and got a new part 3d printed, a computer rebooted and binoculars fixed. What better way for the environment and budget to fix something that's broken instead of tossing it away.

Read more about this special garage sale and new member scouting for the secret friends group NADMIL in Hacking the Code.

The Matthew Effect spelled out in this Reading Infographic by April Greer. Now for dyslexics this is the great juxtaposition. And this shows why is it so fundamentally important that children receive reading instruction that is based on the Science of Reading aka a structured, multi sensory, phonics based approach!
Keep your kids reading or read to them. That can be a graphic novel, comic books, picture books, audiobooks, beginner readers, illustrated chapterbooks anything goes.
Hacking the Code is an illustrated chapterbook about the shenanigans, struggles and strengths of a dyslexic kid. Many kids can't stop reading once they're started. Get your copy now and keep on reading.

The main character in Hacking the Code didn't receive an award all five years of elementary school. Despite his hard work and perseverance, among things. But in the last school assembly that changes to the enormous surprise of Kees himself. He receives a very special recognition from the principal. Kees is the first in the school to receive it. Why? You have to read Hacking the Code for that ;-).

Happy end of school year to everyone. Kids, parents and teachers.

Hacking the Code is a really enjoyable read. Forget about everything that we are hoping to get across in the book about how it feels to be dyslexic, the importance of friendships, the struggle and strengths and how you find out, the support from parents, teachers and friends.
It's a fun read or listen. That's it.

Hacking the Code is set up on purpose in the same way as Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Because my dyslexic child wasn't reading anything until Diary of a Wimpy Kid. That was read in just a few days. Amazing. The combination of text with a lot of white space and illustrations on almost every page was a good recipe. So we used that formula to design Hacking the Code.

When school is not going well for your child and he/she is starting to bend like this kid in winter. Be sure not to blame it on your child. Investigate and find out what teaching methods your child's school is using. Maybe they are not being taught in a way that works for them. Listen to the podcast Sold a Story for a comprehensive background story on why schools are failing their students.

The Sold a Story Podcast stirred communities. I had very strong emotions when hearing about what was, and still is going wrong in reading instruction in the USA. It has me thinking "what was the teaching method my son received when in elementary school? Would the outcome have been different if they had used a method based on the science of reading? What kind of method were they using at all?" For us it's more than 15 years ago but I do know that if my child was in elementary school right now, I would want to find out what reading method they are teaching and find out if that is based on the science of reading.
Too many children end up in Special Education classes that don't belong there, just because they have not been taught the structured, multi-sensory, phonics included approach to learning to read.
Find out what your school is using. And if you haven't listened to the podcast Sold a Story, please do.

"What I like in particular is how the book addresses common misperceptions about children like Kees the main character. For example the opportunity to shine during science period where the task is to build a bug."

I am honored and excited to be part of the Multicultural Children's Book Day event as an author sponsor, donor of Hacking the Code books and reviewer of 'Hear Me' a middle grade book by Kerry O'Malley Cerra.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 (1/26/22) is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Ten years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.

It is so important as parents, authors, teachers to develop relationships with children in order to help them identify their place in the world.

And it's equally important that children (and adults) not only learn about themselves but also about others. To truly learn their own self and how that relates to others and vice versa.

A great way to help do this is introduce stories and materials that act as mirrors and windows.

What is a great mirror or window you know?

Love the idea of this Icelandic holiday tradition of gifting books on December 24th ... then spending the evening reading, often with hot chocolate.

And if you have members of your family that are not really readers? Listening to an audiobook is reading too. Gift them an audiobook and they can curl up too, just like the 'paper readers'.

Curious about the pronunciation? It's "yo-la-bok-a-flot." (I am sure the phonics teachers can explain this better btw ;-)).
Hacking the Code is available as an audiobook, and of course paperback. But for many dyslexics, and audiobook is a great option to get to the story. In this case the story of the shenanigans, struggles and strengths of a dyslexic elementary school boy. You can find it on most audiobook apps and websites. Or go to www.icarepress.com to click to them quickly.
