Introducing your 2024 Vikings of Distinction honoree:

Sheritta A. Strong, MD, MBA, DFAPA – Class of 1995

Dr. Strong is the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of Inclusion for UNMC and an Associate Professor and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of Psychiatry. She was the pre-clinical psychiatry director for over 10 years and continues to advise, mentor, and serve students as the faculty advisor for an inclusive campus-wide student group. She established her career caring for patients with a variety of severe emotional health conditions, serving on the Assertive Community Treatment Team and serving at the Charles Drew Health Center since 2009. She has been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for more than 25 years.

This is the final introduction for our 2024 Vikings of Distinction. The five honorees will be inducted at Omaha North High School during the school day on May 10. The event will be live-streamed on the Vikings of Distinction page. Details are forthcoming.

Introducing your 2024 Vikings of Distinction honoree:

Gene R. Haynes – Administrator/Principal

Mr. Haynes became North’s principal in 2001 and energetically served the school in an official capacity until his retirement in 2020. Before that, he was the school’s assistant principal and athletic director. He served Omaha Public Schools for more than half a century. He began teaching social studies at Omaha Technical High School in 1967, where he became the first Black head coach (basketball) in OPS in 1971. After Tech closed, he became assistant principal and athletic director at McMillan Junior High. He arrived at North in 1987, building relationships and delivering strong leadership while telling countless brothers and sisters in the halls to “Hit the bricks!!”
