Latest on PASSHE Secession legislation from an "untenured and concerned" faculty member at West Chester U, "PASSHE Secession Legislation Leads Down Exploitation Road": http://wp.me/p1unwS-2db.

"With the rise of adjunct or contingent faculty in the contemporary era it is clear that the university is once again living off of the backs of professors (and students). Our APSCUF contract protects us from this tendency. The business model for higher education, to be sure, has in no way retreated, but has steadily grown and developed with capitalism more generally. According to Cohen and Kisker, in the years leading up to WWII, for example, 'the trustees became corporate directors responsible for institutional maintenance; and the administrators became business managers' leading to 'governing boards' shifting 'as businessmen were appointed in greater numbers'."

Grad student, Grace Kavanah, takes on ESU president Marcia Welsh's claims that retrenchment is necessary http://wp.me/p1unwS-223

"For some reason, she [Welsh] neglects to mention the program cuts; perhaps, those are more concerning signs of a serious problem. And she neglects to mention the number of programs that were initially considered for cutting - all of those, including ENGLISH!, were potentially on the chopping block under the "student demand" value metric. Or, let us be explicit about this, what is essentially the retailing of study options - English, History, French - all competing for shelf space at Marcia Welsh’s Walmart University."

Latest on Clarion University cuts: "Shock Turning to Anger and Mobilization at Clarion University" http://wp.me/p1unwS-1NM

"If Clarion President Whitney's slash-and-burn workforce plan shows a disdain for the academic mission of the university, the process by which this plan became known to the university community is down-right sickening. I wanted to know more about how people first learned about Clarion's new workforce plan, so I called Beth MacDaniel, Chair of the English Department and President of Clarion's chapter of the faculty union, APSCUF. What MacDaniel told me should set off alarm bells for anyone who gives half a damn about shared governance and democratic process."

Latest Raging Chicken article on Kutztown U's new gun policy, http://goo.gl/o9eJL, "Wild West U: Kutztown University Opens Campus to Guns."

"Just over a week before Kutztown University will welcome the families and friends of soon-to-be graduates, the university has decided to revise a long-standing policy in order to welcome guns onto its 289 acre campus. While the massacre of students and teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT is still fresh in people’s minds and the families of the victims are still canvassing the nation in support of reasonable gun control policies, KU President Javier Cevallos and his Administrative Council decided that now was the time to make it easier for students, faculty, and staff to carry weapons on campus."
