Grist: A Journal of the Literary Arts

Grist: A Journal of the Literary Arts A literary journal out of the University of Tennessee, we publish fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, craft essays, and interviews with writers.

Founded in 2007 by graduate students in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Tennessee, Grist: A Journal of the Literary Arts is a nationally distributed journal of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews, and craft essays. Published annually every spring, each issue is accompanied by Grist Online, which features some of the best work we’ve received during our reading period (June 15-

Sept 15). In addition to general submissions, Grist holds the Pro Forma Contest every spring (March 15-April 30), recognizing unpublished creative work that explores the relationship between content and form, whether in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or a hybrid genre. Throughout the year, we publish interviews, craft essays, and reviews on our blog, The Writing Life. http://gristjournal.com

Are you looking for a place to submit both academic and scholarly work? UTK’s biennial Interdisciplinary Conference, NEXUS, is currently accepting submissions, which will take place (in a hybrid format) April 5-7th, 2024.

The theme “Home/Bodies” welcomes conversations regarding a multiplicity of home/body spaces and aims to gain a greater understanding of how to navigate our homes and ourselves when the rooting or grounding of this space is dichotomous with the bodies that we inhabit.

In addition to academic papers NEXUS 2024 also welcomes creative work to be shared and discussed in a panel format. Creative submissions may include:
-Multi-genre writing (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, hybrid)
-Visual art
-Video projects
-Musical performances

Please send abstracts of approximately 250-300 words as an attached PDF or Word document to: [email protected] by December 15, 2023. Please indicate if you would prefer to present your work in person or virtually, and if your submission is scholarly or creative, in the body of the email.

Grist has a wonderful collection of poetry and drawings looking for a review. Plumstuff is a reinvention of Rolli’s out-of-print debut collection Plum Stuff with 20 revised poems from the original collection and 40 new poems and illustrations. This collection has been described as “ripe with Rolli’s trademark economy, quotability, and wit, these are poems to be gulped down like summer fruit.” Let us know if you’re interested!

1. The Gleaming of the Blade by Christian J. Collier is a collection of poetry that examines Black masculinity in the contemporary American South alongside the ghosts of the past
2. The Drowning House by John Sibley Williams is another collection of poetry that grapples with ghosts and injustice in American landscapes and history
