Melisse Shapiro, also known as M.J. Rose, an early self-publishing advocate as well as bestselling author, died unexpectedly on December 10 while in Florida visiting her father. She was 71.

In a Soapbox column she wrote for PW in 2012, Rose recounted how after her first novel, the racy Lip Service, was turned down by traditional publishers in 1998, she used her background in advertising and marketing to release the title as an e-book and print book on Amazon. Within six months, Lip Service had sold more than 75,000 copies and would later be published by Pocket Books. This title hit #1 in Pediatrics in Amazon's Kindle Store without any Amazon Best-Seller campaign shenanigans needed to get there and has a 4.8 star rating. Pun intended, it's a "cut above" any other title on the subject. 😉 It's well researched, well written, well designed and that cover image is AWESOME! Compelling testimonials too.

If you know any expectant parents who may be having a boy, this is an important, well researched and informative read on all aspects of circumcision. In fact, from my perspective, it's the definitive work on the subject. Some VERY interesting info that I had no clue about after all my years as it's not something often discussed but affects millions all over the world.

Congratulations to Carol Marra of Satori in Gold Press whose beautifully illustrated children's book, How Tori Got Her Wings, won 1st Place Gold, 2nd Place Silver and 3rd Place Bronze C**A EVVY Awards in three different categories at the 30th Annual C**A EVVY Book Awards Banquet and Ceremony held at the historic Hotel Boulderado in Boulder, Colorado on September 19th. Very proud of all of my clients who won 2024 C**A EVVY Awards like Carol Ann Kates of Penny Lane Press of Colorado who picked up a 1st Place Gold and 2nd Place Silver for her Grocery Shopping Secrets in two different categories and Christina Stinchcomb of Airy Hill Press who won two 2nd Place Silver C**A EVVY Awards for her Riding with the Chakras. Photo from the 30th Annual Colorado Independent Publishers Association (C**A) EVVY Book Awards at the Hotel Boulderado on Sept 19th. It was an honor to be the emcee for the awards and I enjoyed celebrating the many talented authors and publishers whose books were recognized. Evelyn Kaye (flowered top on my right), C**A's Founder and the namesake of the C**A EVVY Book Awards was our special guest and keynote speaker. Lois Hjelmstad (blue jacket on my left) received yet another C**A EVVY Award for her latest book. She was also at the first C**A EVVY Book Award ceremony 30 years ago. The Print Sponsor of the 30th Annual C**A EVVY Awards was Colorado's own Frederic Printing/RRD and it was a pleasure to have Frederic's President, Tracy Groholski (far left), Account Exec John Lawrence 2nd from Right) and National Sales Manager, Tina Campbell (far right) join us for the event.

As many in the Denver area learned last week, legendary 9News anchor, Ward Lucas, passed away. I was fortunate to have Ward as a friend and client and in his time he touched many lives. Ward was the keynote speaker at the 2018 C**A EVVY Awards Ceremony and this is what we shared in the event's program. I thought everyone might like to read what Ward had us include about who he was and what he did. We also included info about two of his books, Sometimes Ya Gotta Ride the Elephant and Get This Mother Published!

Ward was an interesting, engaging and humorous speaker and an excellent writer. I know that the 2018 Colorado Independent Publishers Association (C**A) EVVY Award-winners who took their photos with Ward will remember him fondly. He participated in the C**A Author Showcase at the 2018 MPIBA FallCon and regularly attended monthly C**A meetings. He will be greatly missed.
