“We had a great fair this year and all the members and families were so supportive of each other, and it couldn’t have gone better,” said Traci Reed, Klamath County 4-H Coordinator.

At the time of publication, Klamath County 4-H reports that total auction sales are shy of $1.4 million on 284 lots.

“The auction was a big success. We didn’t break the record amount this year, but we are almost at $1.4 million in sales, and that will be our second-highest auction. We are very happy with this outcome, considering the economy today,” said Reed.

The 2024 Klamath County Fair was exciting for exhibitors and visitors alike. The four-day celebration included award-winning music, motorsport mayhem, carnival thrills, and livestock showcases. When the dust settled, sixteen

On July 30, 2024, ownership of Keno Dam changed, with PacifiCorp transferring the title to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. There was no fanfare, no media event, no press release.

But the event is highly notable. Over 110 years, PacifiCorp (and its predecessors) built and operated six dams on the Klamath River. As the summer of 2024 comes to an end, four dams are gone, and Reclamation operates the remaining two.

Harvesters are combing through fields of grain. Hay trucks are rolling off the scales. Garlic is getting sorted and shipped south, rootstock for next year’s crop. Bright green fields of potatoes are still weeks away. The smell of onions is in the air.

The Klamath Project is most beautiful in the late summer when all the work of farmers and ranchers comes to fruition.

But bare and fallow fields are also everywhere, demonstrating the value of water in a landscape that receives less than a foot of precipitation a year. That fact is particularly true this year, with a “super El Niño” having produced predictably hot temperatures throughout most of the summer.

In a letter to Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton, Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Klamath Water Users Association (KWUA) outlines several pressing threats to the region's wildlife, agriculture, and overall ecosystem, urging Reclamation to implement necessary measures to prevent avoidable disasters.

“We're sounding an alarm for action. There are solutions readily available if we can get past treating water like tug of war,” said KWUA Executive Director Paul Simmons.

The Klamath County Fair is set to break records again in 2024, building on last year's success and introducing exciting new changes. The fair, running August 1-4, 2024, embodies its motto, "We've Got a Great Thing Growing," with expanded offerings and enhanced facilities.

Last year's Junior Livestock Auction was a testament to the fair's growing impact, with sales reaching a staggering $1.7 million. The auction featured 380 of the county's finest youth and 441 project animals, showcasing the community's strong support for local agriculture.

Fair Manager Derrick Rowley emphasized the fair's commitment to adapting to community needs, mainly supporting 4-H and FFA programs. “We've made significant changes to accommodate the growth in our 4-H and FFA participation.”

While most of the local producers are dealing with issues of the Klamath Project, the executive director of Family Farm Alliance, Dan Keppen, has his hands in water issues throughout the western United States. He is often dealing with difficulties on the Colorado River, inside the Central Valley of California, and here in the Klamath Basin.

Recently, BAN Editor Brian Gailey had the opportunity to visit Dan and chat about the Family Farm Alliance, his history with water, and what he thinks are the biggest issues in regard to irrigation.

Grain production is vital to Oregon’s agriculture industry, with roughly 100,000 acres of all grains produced statewide coming from the Klamath Basin.

As a result, the Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center (KBREC), in collaboration with the Oregon State University Cereal Variety Testing Program, has been assisting local producers in choosing the right wheat variety since 2012.
